[Spridgets] Engine Break-in

It has been bored, ported, big valves, roller rockers, and a "warm" Elgin cam. Initially it had an old HIF44 carb from a Harley (chrome on chrome in chrome), rebuilt by Joe Curto (I assume with the proper needle), and a 123 distributor. But when I was unable to start it with everything new, I reverted to the older, proven, distributor and carbs. Only today I remembered that the previous engine was a 1098. It was built by Frank and Frankie and ran perfectly until it developed a fatal knock.

Unfortunately, we have been travelling for three months (13,000 miles to Alaska and back!), and I have forgotten some of what I did before (old age). So I have started over checking all he specs. I found the rockers set at 0.010 in., when the cam probably wants 0.015-6 in. = 0.40mm. Don't know how much that might inhibit starting. It now fires, but can't continue.

All suggestions welcome.

  Michael,

What is the state of tune of the engine? The larger engine will most likely need different needles. Vizard gives some suggestions for needles to be used in engines in differing states of tune. If the engine is stock you should be able to use the needles that are stock for a 1275. Careful break-in and reading of the plugs could be important.

I just remebered that the "formerly working perfecty" carbs I am using to start my new 1275 engine were on a 1098 engine. What does that imply for adjustment on this larger engine? Should they still be set initially at +12 flats? I do have a suggestion of flooding, but that could be from poor firing.
