Several years ago I fitted an Anderson auxiliary power connecter to my
Sprite and I never liked the way this worked. The cables were too thick,
being sized to the Anderson terminals and rather than get smaller (internally)
Anderson terminals, and thinner cable I just pressed ahead and produced
something I never liked the look of every time I lifted the bonnet.
Eventually I ordered the correct size Anderson terminals but then left them to one
side while I pondered the cable runs for several years and so I had more of
a never started, than an unfinished, project. About a year ago I was
looking for a new car battery for the Sprite. I found several that were what I
wanted, but nearly all had small/Japanese terminal posts which would have
meant replacing battery clamps etc. Eventually, following a lot of
internet searching I found a good battery that did have regular size terminal
posts. However, when I went to buy and collect it I found that while it did
have regular size terminal posts it turns out it was a small terminal post
battery with hollow lead cones tapped on top! Fast forward to the Anderson
project which is to replace the super fat wiring with an appropriate size
wiring, more to get things to look right than save weight. I decided I
might as well convert to the small terminals at this time since I’d need to
replace the battery clamps anyway. One thing lead to another and I ended up
doing a bunch of tidying up on the job which slowed me down including work
to the Anderson fixing bracket, painting it, doing the earth lead twice
since I wasn’t happy with how it turned out the first time. I’ve also
decided to sleeve the live lead in clear plastic tubing for extra insulation
which will be a follow up job. Since I weigh everything I replace in the never
ending quest for weight saving I’d figured on maybe saving a 100g or so on
this job but in fact saved 540g which was a massive bonus.
