Proper screw up spring compressor clamps aren't too pricey.  But I have used a ratchet strap tie down round the middle coils and squeezed the coil up.  I also tied a spring up with lashings of rope.  Don't use the top and bottom coil - there is a problem in getting the rope out afterwards!!   Be ever so careful it doesn't slip when tight.  Not a recommended way but it can get you out of a jam.
