No, a Mini (transverse A-series) uses a lip seal. Because the Mini crank does not have a flange, there’s no obstacle to fitting a one piece lip seal. Also, because the traverse design uses an aluminum case where the back plate would be on the inline engines, it’s part of the overall design.
