Hi George,

I remember seeing this in the newspapers when it happened along with a famous photo of the Sprite:
http://tinyurl.com/c9zuqea  The story you quoted is a bit incorrect though.  Meixner was driving the Sprite, behind him on the package shelf was his fiancee and in the trunk was his future mother-in-law. (the better to catch any machine gun bullets as he passed through the checkpoint.  The Sprite was a rental car hired in W. Berlin. A second driver pulled the same escape trick shortly afterwards and when he returned it to the rental agency, found it was the same Sprite that Meixner had used.  The E. Germans changed the crossing gates after the second escape so it couldn't be repeated.
