Moss ! and Cars & Coffee every Sunday morning. Its absolutely AMAZING the number of exotics and old cars some of the people that live here have. I am constantly impressed with the calibre of cars that show up. 30 miles up the mountain in Solvang is a really nice Motorcycle museum. And 30 miles south in Ventura is the Mullin Auto Museum. Unfortunately even with Moss here there is very little British car stuff going on and very few LBCs on the road. For things to see. There is the Mission which is worth a visit, then our Courthouse which should not be missed, both of these take only a half hour to walk around (more if you are a history buff) and are well restored. The Courthouse is only a short block from State street, our main shopping street. Staying on upper downtown state, you should really go to the Karpeles Manuscript library, its a short look around maybe 1/2 hour but some of the documents they have are worth a look, 2 years ago they had the Magna Carta, they rotate the manuscripts along with the displays so it changes every 6 or so months. My daughter loved it a few years ago when they had a space suit that actually walked on the moon along with original blueprints of the space capsule. Everything so far is free and even if you are not interested in the stuff, they are pretty quick to see and build "wifey" points. Staying with history and buildings, there is the Presidio which is interesting from the point of view of how they are restoring it and what it was built for, etc. and while you can walk around it for free, they charge $6 to walk inside and see 3 rooms that you can actually look into from the windows while you walk around for free. The Presidio is 2 blocks from State st. but it is near C'est Cheese if you are into Cheese from all around the world and some pretty good sandwiches. The Presidio is also across the street from 3 Pickles home of the second best Pastrami sandwiches in SB. On the 900 block of State st. (same block as the Presidio) is a new pizza place that I don't remember the name of, they use 2 wood burning ovens and the pizza's are pretty good. If the wife is into Antiques, there are a few stores in SB but the best ones are in Summerland only 8-10 miles down the road and Tres Lune has a wood burning pizza oven and does pretty good pizzas. General "shopping" is all done on State st. but its a long street, so the 2 malls are separated by miles, we informally call it lower state and upper state. All the bars and dance clubs are on VERY low state by the beach. Speaking of the beach, of course you HAVE to walk the harbor and breakwater, I would stay away from the restaurants at the harbor, they are very touristy with the exception of Brophy's which is a small place upstairs, unfortunately the wait is always over an hour and often multiple hours and they don't take reservations, it was the local hangout at the harbor. On the warf are some good restaurants, the very best for me is SB Shellfish company, they have Atlantic ocean oysters (only place in SB that does, all others get their oysters on West coast) and are reasonable on their shellfish, its all alive in huge aquariums. No tables to sit at, you sit around the bar which goes all the way around the room, so not fancy like the Warf or Moby Dick's and priced less and guaranteed FRESH. There is a Art show on Sunday's at the beach which is quite nice with local artists but I would go to C&C instead. If you did not build enough wifey points during the day and need some more before the night, you can go to Montecito and shop around upscale shops and go to Via Vai Trattoria for dinner, she will like it and they have a wood oven and make a really good pizza. A drive through Montecito and looking at the mansions is always fun as well. For food while walking down state I would go to Norton's Pastrami, home of the best Pastrami sandwhich in SB, its next door to Giovanni's Pie's which does not use a wood oven but is the last pizza place in town that does not use a conveyor belt oven, only 2 tables its more designed for take out. Do NOT confuse Giovanni's Pie's with Giovanni's restaurants (there are 3 of them), their pizza is garbage. Good Italian food is Petrini's if you like family style food, if you want fancier there are many tratorria's in town. Norton's is only open for lunch, they close at 4 (I think). For Dinner there is a HUGE variety, Dan's on upper state has a wood oven but I have not tried their pizza yet, however I know the oven builder and chef personally so I assume its very good. Dan's is a old biker bar that is trying to upscale itself, so one half bar, one half food now, but except for the pizza its mostly snacks from the wood oven. Walking distance from Dan's is Harry's, pretty good steaks, its the local hangout, been there since the 1940's and warning their drinks are HEAVY on the alcohol, the food is not great but its never bad and its a nice environment. Most of the restaurants on State are pretty good. Best steaks are probably at the Tee-off, but my choice is Paradise because they have good steaks and great fries (I prefer shoestring fries). On upper De La Vina is a old shopping mall, in there is Presto Pasta, really good pasta of all kinds and really CHEAP, but warning there are no other choices just pasta with all kinds of sauces/toppings. Next door is Nicky D's pizza, and while he advertises its a wood burning its actually coal burning so its a white oven, the pizza there is different, its what he calls a New York style and you can taste the freshness of the ingredients but the dough is always soggy so I don't go there anymore. Then there is IV (Isla Vista) next to UCSB, tons of really good food for REALLY cheap and in June the scenery will be quite good due to the warm weather. Make sure you bring sun glasses so the wife does not know what you are staring at and she should wear them also (so my wife tells me). Angry wings is awesome !!! and so is the BBQ place whose name I can't remember but can walk to for lunch and get the name if you need it. Still reading ? I can go on :) mike On 04/22/2013 05:12 PM, Trevor Jessie wrote: > It looks like I'll be in Santa Barbara the week of June 16th. I'm tagging > along with my wife on a "business" trip. My final thoughts on this...after several beers. I think more LBC's have been set aside to rot away as a result of generator/regulator issues than anything else. Yep. That's what I believe. If more folks were proactive back in the 60's and 70's to convert the cars to alternators then there would be a lot more surviving LBCs on the road today. Instead, the owners got frustrated, parked them "out back", and now they have a tree growing up through the center of them. These cars are lost forever. Yeah, it's great that some can get by with the the original generator setup. But these individuals should not scorn the move to convert to alternators. It is not in their best interest, nor is it in the best interest of the hobby in general. I believe that the the popularity and intrigue of the little British sports car lives and dies by it's presence on the road. This is confirmed to me every day that I observe a "head turn" as my little Bugeye blasts by someone. They can't belive what they are looking at. It's not hard to convert to an alternator. But more importantly, it's not hard to convert back to a generator if you want to later on. There is no "heresy" here. It is a trivial thing. Anyone who would tell you differently is a backwards old fart that can't evolve. Shame on them! So don't be an asshole and somehow try to claim that the generator is better or as good as an alternator. You can't win the arguemet. Go ahead. I am ready to defend the alternator. Soon I will be able to get in the car, but will need help getting out - not very impressive. I am now convinced that I have a wiring problem somewhere. That is, of course, after I threw away one multimeter and replaced the generator pulley that split in half and fell out in the street. Example: I have been tracing wires. The big brown wire that is supposed to go from the regulator to the battery via the starter solenoid, about 12", instead goes through the bulkhead to the right interior under the dash, crosses left, then exits the interior through another hole by the battery. It is a long run and impossible to check as it is all wound in black tape. The best I can do is a continuity check end to end. I have yet to find the far end of the ground from the regulator, but it has continuity. I just went out to check that gound again, because we all know the probems with grounds. The battery has been on a trickle charger all night, as reduced charging means I run on the battery alone. But I apparently forgot to turn off the key, so the battery was sucked completely dry while on the charger - zero voltage. I have a parasitic drain somewhere that is greater than the input of a trickle charger. The battery is only a few days old. Abandon it and put the proper 12" wire in place, if you can. With everything off remove your negative battery terminal and see how many amps are being drawn between the terminal and the negative battery post with your meter. In other words put the meter on amps and in series with your battery. Don't try and start it or do anything that requires a lot of current with the meter in series because everything will be running through the meter. I think with everything stock it should read zero amps. An aftermarket modern radio might draw some milliamps, for example. If you get a reading of 1 amp or something then disconnect one electrical thing at a time until the reading goes away. Start by pulling fuses (if you have them) to eliminate circuits/devices. I'd look hard at the regulator. Grounds cause all kinds of problems but they don't drain batteries. Do you have a regulator that is known to be good? New from M*$$ is not the same as known good. Spridget electrics are not complicated. You should be able to identify the power drain pretty easily. On Wed, May 1, 2013 at 7:48 AM, Michael Rowe wrote: > Tell you what. Now, let's see if I can help. Do you have the "Lucas_Generator_and_Control_Box_Tests" document? It's pretty handy for dihards like yourself. I will email it to you off list expediantly. Even the generator is pretty simple. The big wire out the generator is where all the output comes. The little wire is the field. The field is an input. If there is no field current applied then there is no output from the generator. The regulator senses the drop in battery voltage and applies field current when needed (assuming the regulator is adjusted correctly) You said it was new and adjusted so don't mess with your regulator. Run the tests outlined in the document and let us know of the resuilts. Do all alternators have internal regulators? Back in the day, my brand new '68 MGB had a Lucas alternator with an internal regulator. The regulator would go bad and I had to replace the alternator after 8-9 months. I did this 3 times. No one could find the problem. I had a fog and a driving light and with those on anything else I switched on, i.e., wipers, the no charge light would come on. I know the early alternators did not have much more output than the dynamos but it became $$$ and I traded the car in on a '73 Capri V6. I kept thinking if my car had an "external" regulator I could have monitored that and saved an alternator or 2. Just curious. Lucas alternators? Heck you might as well run a generator then! We need to come up with the "easy to do" alternator upgrade. Tim Collins has a nice set of instructions, but like me he had to cut the alternator ear to the engine. He also did a lot of welding for the bracket. Tim is using a "Worldwide Alternator part # 14717. (Mitsubishi) 60 amp as used on 1987 Mazda 323, Mazda B2000, '84-'89 Nisson 300ZX and a host of other cars". We need a "no mod" alternator solution. It needs to use a cheap and plentiful Modern alternator. Most of them no longer have V pulleys but maybe we can find a suitable pulley from McMaster Carr or some place like that. This guy did it with the 78-80 Fiesta Alternator: http://www.nonlintec.com/sprite/alternator/ I Googled it and that alternator seems to be cheap and plentiful. ($35 from PartsGeek.com) The only downside is this is an older alternator and it has the external sheet metal fan. I prefer a more modern alternator though, I think they actually have made some improvements in alternator design in the last 25 years. But I think that the Bosch unit (combined with Frank Clarici's instructions) might be the easiest approach. I'm using a (I believe 1993) Honda Prelude alternator "NSA 90 amp". But I had to locate a pulley and the connections are a little more complex. I like my setup but its not a bolt in swap. I think I'm using the existing generator bracket. -----Original Message----- From: spridgets-bounces at autox.team.net [mailto:spridgets-bounces at autox.team.net] On Behalf Of dwoerpel at wi.net Sent: Thursday, May 02, 2013 11:33 PM To: WeslakeMonza1330 at aol.com Cc: spridgets at autox.team.net Subject: Re: [Spridgets] generator/regulator Question. Then if you put all the headlights on and they draw 2 volts the clicking points thing needs to open to let all the dynamo produce the full charge - 12 to the battery and 2 to the lights. The easiest way to see this work is have an assistant switch stuff on while the engine is running and for extra interest have a voltmeter across the battery. Most automotive relays are rated 30 amps or less and your starter solenoid should carry 100-200 amps or more to actually power the starter motor. That being the case you will need to connect the relay to the solenoid not the starter. In the case that you have a modern starter it may have a built in solenoid and you could use the relay in your harness to activate the built in solenoid. ----- Original Message ----- From: To: Sent: Tuesday, May 07, 2013 8:52 AM Subject: [Spridgets] Starter circuit question I have a new after market wiring harness which has a starter relay on the fuse panel. I think the original Lucas rotors were marginal, and combined with modern high output ignition coils (or an MSD box) then they arc through and fail. Typically automotive condensors are about 0.2-0.3 uf. Assuming that one mode of failure is that they short internally, then you can just put the multi-meter on continuity check and see if the condensor is shorted. -----Original Message----- From: spridgets-bounces at autox.team.net [mailto:spridgets-bounces at autox.team.net] On Behalf Of Martyn Ridley Sent: Sunday, May 12, 2013 4:43 PM To: spridgets at autox.team.net Subject: [Spridgets] Bad batch of Condensers Just as there was a bad batch of black rotors several years ago there now seems to be a bad batch of condensers out there. In all my (many) years I had not experienced failures like this. It appears that a batch of orange wire units are faulty. We (my friends and I) have experienced 3 in the past 6 months - all recent purchases. I did get (yes, orange wire) good units from Advanced Distributors. We will see. (My last orange wire unit worked for most of last season before quitting this spring). I am still suspect of all orange wire condensers and so keep a couple of old (black wire) units in the car just in case. My Moss supplier points out that all these parts come from the same place so its best to wait till the current batch is used up. As for electronic ignition, I tried it back in the 70s (Mobelec and Pirranah) but found it was quasi reliable. I'm sure things have improved (witness my British Honda) but I have have heard stories of Protronics issues. And, I was advised by Advanced Distributors to stick with points. So my next step is to check with my English suppliers to see if they have non-orange wire condensers. I will keep the list informed. It's the straight bodywork that makes it so desirable, and rightly so. Price is reasonable. Old Fiat 500s are fetching $25k+ at auction. (he made a worthy presentation at the Midget 50th at Elkhart Lake last year, and is a Spridget owner) Here is his response: Peter, I'd be happy if you could post my reply to this thread... Its not about length, its about microfarads and bleed-down rate, as well as internal shorts. I just spent hours evaluating condensers for Moss, including Martin's version. The tell-tale sign that a condenser will live a short life is limited (or no) bleed-down of stored voltage. That is where a couple manufacturers of (orange, black, red, and green wire) condensers go wrong. I personally chose to use orange wire on my condensers, and they are made properly, as are Martin's condensers, and a couple others. There are at least 9 versions in current production. Message-ID: <00b201ce526c$bed32fa0$3c798ee0$@hky.com> Haven't seen any chatter about Import Carlisle, this weekend and was wondering who all is planning to be there and whether or not any sort of meeting/gathering is planned. I was going to haul a '76 Midget shell down there, but I chickened out. I'll try to move it via Craig's List, before (very reluctantly) consigning it to the crusher. Anyway, I'll be arriving with my Tartan Red '72 Midget somewhere around mid-day, tomorrow. Hope to see some of yinz there. Bud Osbourne From kevinv1275 at gmail.com Thu May 16 14:16:28 2013 From: kevinv1275 at gmail.com (Kevin Valentine) Date: Thu, 16 May 2013 16:16:28 -0400 Subject: [Spridgets] Carlisle traffic I81 is now open Message-ID: *All Clear on Interstate 81 through south central Pennsylvania* ** *All District 8* Southbound Interstate 81 at Exit 70 approaching Harrisburg in Dauphin County was reopened to traffic at about 7:35 this evening. Northbound I-81 approaching the Harrisburg area was reopened to traffic at I-81 Exit 59 in Cumberland County at 7 p.m. this evening. This means that all of I-81 is now clear for traffic through the Harrisburg area. A fiery tanker crash shortly after 6 a.m. on Thursday, May 9, on the ramp from northbound I-81 to westbound Route 22/322 closed the ramp and the bridge that carries eastbound Route 22 over I-81 in the Exit 67 interchange and also forced the closure of both directions of I-81 that pass underneath those bridges. The spans of the eastbound Route 22 bridge that passed over I-81 have been removed, making it safe to reopen traffic on I-81. The deck of the ramp where the tanker truck overturned needs to be replaced, but this can happen later, while I-81 is open to traffic. Protective shielding has been installed under this bridge to protect motorists. To help deal with traffic congestion after the fire closed I-81 on Thursday, the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission waived its tolls between its Carlisle interchange and Harrisburg East interchange to utilize this part of Interstate 76 as an I-81 detour. Now that I-81 has been reopened, this waiver will end at midnight tonight. At midnight, the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission will restore tolls for trips for the Harrisburg East Interchange to the Carlisle Interchange (and the reverse trip). The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation thanks you for your patience and your cooperation. I had no idea that he had his hands in so many RARE vintage car restorations. Sebrings, Speed Wells, etc... and not only Sprites, but other notable vintage British sports cars. And not only cars, but he has restored alot of old vintage motorcycles (which I found out while talking to him at the AACA museum). This was a special treat for me, since I had worked at a motorcycle shop during my high school years and had worked on Triumphs' and Nortons. Not to mention the AACA museum had a special exhibit on British motorcycles. Jack should write a book on all that he has done. Daniel, hook up with him and make an effort to preserve the "secret history" of the BMC specials. He has intimate knowledge on the factory prepared engines. If you don't than someone else will; maybe me. If the only thing that happened at Rick's next gathering was an hour talk by Jack, then I would I would gladly attend. Fortunately Rick's event was more than this. It was a chance to hook up with some cool folks of the past. Another cool thing that popped up was that couple that showed up at the Fireside mountain grill on Friday night. I don't know who she was, but she had a real clean Bugeye with a 1275 and a Moss supercharger. It was unbelievable. And she was talking how she wants to make it "original"! I think I was the only witness on that one. Why are all the cool chicks taken? None-the-less, there were reasonable criticisms of the event. There was a lot of travel between several hotels that were in close proximity. I think we would be better off to stay at one hotel in Carlise and with some local events. Nothing at the hotel, but perhaps some historic tours in the area.h I am going to provide my suggestions to Rick and Cindy to make the 60th a success. Most importantly, I think a rally through the rolling hills of central PA is in order. How about a mileage Rally? What ar your thoughts? Don't worry. The sixieth will be something very special. I'm hoping that the collective wisdom of the list can help me figure out what is happening. A couple of weeks ago, someone pulled out in front of me, so I had to do a 'slam on the brakes' stop. In the past, ABS would kick in, the pedal would judder, and the car would safely and quickly come to a stop. This time though, the car dove to the right and the front right wheel locked up. Didn't hit anything, but that was not the result I was expecting. I've had the car since new, and it now has over 276,000 miles on it. So I figured that one of the calipers was sticking, and since the calipers were original to the car, it was time to swap them out. So I got a new set of front calipers, plus new flexible brake lines all around and got everything installed. Took it on a test drive, and same thing. Car dives to the right, front right wheel locks up and if you don't have your hand on the steering wheel, the wheel actually turns. So I then tried swapping the front wheels to see if it was a tire or wheel issue, and nothing changed. I then swapped the calipers, rotors and pads from side to side, and that wasn't it either. I got the car up off of the ground, and then did a visual check of all of the suspension parts. I had replaced just about everything (lower control arms, upper control arms, tie rod ends, hubs, bushings all the way around) back in the fall. Nothing appeared to be loose or out of place. At this point, I was stumped. I took the car to the local mechanic, and let them have a crack at it. They rechecked everything, and ran through some tests of their own, but couldn't find the issue. They thought maybe the ball joints on the bottom of the steering knuckles were too loose, so I had them replace those and recheck the alignment. Alignment checked out ok, but the car still dives to the right under hard braking. So now I'm leaning towards master cylinder or ABS unit issue. I don't see any fluid leaking, but that doesn't rule out an internal issue. I checked the temps of the rotors with an infrared thermometer, but the difference between the two sides was only 10 degrees F after a 20 minute drive. The car evidently has a split system, with the right front/left rear on one circuit and left front/right rear on the other. This has been one of the more difficult issues to track down. Anyone have any ideas or thoughts on other things to check? Any info or help would be much appreciated. I don't think it is an ABS electrical issue, rather a hydraulic issue. I pulled the fuse and relay for the ABS system, to remove the computer and sensors from the equation. I did hook up the OBD scanner, but it didn't throw any codes. With the ABS system disabled, the car still dove to the right under hard braking. So my thoughts on the ABS issue would be related to one of the hydraulic valves being stuck/partially blocked. These balls keep you from being able to select 2 gears at once which would be disastrous. There is also and interlock spacer that goes between the 1/2 and the reverse shaft. It has the same purpose. These interlock balls and spacer are installed as you fit the selector shafts. I sent Mark the Gearbox section of the manual in anther email. The interlocks are shown in figure F3 of the manual. The tranny is back together and all five gears engage just fine. Having the Clymer and Haynes versions of the transmission section of the manual is a big help (Thanks Rick), as was the bit of hand holding by Jim. In the end, I installed the 3-4 rod first, and worked around that, the ball just didn't seem to want to fit into the 1-2 detent far enough (go figure). Nos I have a little bit of experience with it, and think that I know what I'm doing (a little knowledge is a dangerous thing, eh?) and am ready to move forward with the trans that needs just a bit of touching up to work well. thanks again to all.
