BTW, It is amazing how much these rally watchs sets sell for. Original vintage rally watch sets go for big bucks. Understandably so, they are pieces of racing heritage. There is also an outfit making them new but they want big bucks as well. Finally you can go on ebay and try to cobble together a stopwatch and pocket watch combo yourself. This will still cost you big bucks. Seems there are avid swiss stopwatch collectors who have an interest outside of rally usage. I thought it would be a cool accessory to have on my dash. But I think I might have to settle for some surplus Russian watches, or, god forbid, something from China. In 1968-69 I bought a Heuer wristwatch since I was getting into roadrally back then. It was a Carrera model with three small dials. One was the second hand for the watch, the other two measured the stopwatch to 12 hours. I also ordered it with the decimal minute dial which was a nice touch for rallyes. I paid about $170 for the watch with a stainless steel case and a leather band. Replacement leather bands alone now sell for about $300! After years of use it started acting up. I stuck it in a drawer and just about forgot I had it. I moved into disposable watches like Timex. Back in 2009 I decided to sell the Heuer on eBay. It actually still worked, but the crystal was cracked and it certainly needed a good cleaning. I took it to a jewelry store and was told it would be $600 to $800 to restore the watch. That prompted me to sell it. (I could buy a car for that!) The bidding was heavy, and I got over $600 for the watch that needed at least that much in repairs. I do miss it, but financially I couldn't afford to keep it. I've junked so many now - all new ones not original ones I could have bought the titanium bolt and still been quids in. So with a cost likely to be between #25 and #30 EACH bolt + shipping I'm going to have a very small batch made. From what I remember from the last time I got quotes for this it needed about 4 times as many bolts as there was interest for to get the price any lower. For simplicity I'm only going to have the bolts made in the superior grade of stainless (not the choice of 2 grades there was originally) and titanium which only worked out something like #4 or so more than the stainless. I'm undecided on the split pin hole as it added about #2+ to the price. I do intend for the wrenching head to be 12 point and probably 7/16 wrenching like the ARP stainless stuff is. So e-mail if you are very interested now, specifying stainless or titanium and how many bolts you want and eventually I'll get back to you. I've checked the material specs and they exceed class 8.8 and certainly exceed the stuff currently available. I'll be getting an original bolt for testing soon. So any more takers for these stainless steel bolts or even Ti ? I've usually discovered this after stripping the thread with a calibrated torque wrench on the correct size socket. I've been in contact with a bolt manufacture who can make a similar bolt in a high grade of stainless steel. The idea being they won't corrode into the metalastik bushings and thus have to be hammered and destroyed. All you engineer types can be supplied with details of the different grades of stainless steel on offer if you want. However, I'm confident the stainless bolt will be far stronger in every respect than the current offering from the usual suspects. I also plan to get an original bolt, even a damaged one so that it can be tested in comparasion to the current offering and the stainless bolt. What I need to know is what the level of interest is for this by number of bolts so I can get a feel for the volume and thus price. I also need to know if you'd be willing to pay an extra #1 for the superior grade of stainless and whether you want to probably save #2 by not having the hole for the split pin on account of using a nylock rather than castellated nut. Final price will be more than what I've been paying over here (I think I paid #6+ a bolt. So even though the little guy is home and finally had a Christmas he is still going through some uncomfortable stuff to continue to get well. Frankie 4 was bumped off the list the last time there was a hickup on the server and hasn't had time to get back on as he has been really busy. Therefore just a thought maybe some of you would like to send a card or even more to the little guy to let Frankie 4 & his lovely wife Jen know we here at the list that his dad helped develop know we are thinking of them. I know Frankie 4 will be really busy this summer with extra work as their insurance does not cover even half of the bill which I would imagine is well over 100K or perhaps 200K. I plan to hire him to paint Pinky as he is the best around and could use the cash. I know he has been taking classes for mill & lathe and now has both industrial mill & lathe so if you need something made maybe offer the work to him? Prayers of a 100% recovery for both little Frankie 5 and the stress his parents Frankie 4 & Jen are going through is also in order : ) I don't have his address handy but his dad's is on the Spritenut website Ed has so kindly made: http://www.spritenut.com/. In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: That is 100% Pieces. Three years ago I went with Frank to a car show in PA, and the woman he sold it to had it in the parking lot with a for sale sign on it. Frank wanted to buy it back and I knew it because he said I wonder what she wants for it I have cash, but the woman had it way over priced as I asked her later in the day when she approached the car. If it was priced fairly Frank would have bought it as I saw it in his eyes. I spoke with the owner which was the woman he sold it to (she told me that) and she told me she was moving away from NJ and had to spend thousands on knee surgery and didn't have insurance and could use the money for the surgery (or something to that effect) she wanted it sold before the move. She had it listed around the same time 2010 and no takers probably because it is over priced although done well as Frank was very proud of the car and most importantly the engine. Being the ad is almost word for word I am assuming this is the same woman and the photo of the young guy well leave that for your own imagination ......ahahaha. Although if she is still having knee problems why on earth would she want a Harley? That being said she is probably not successful with a wrench and still has a few good years left to play with toys. BTW I remember she also said she bought the car because her friend (an older gal who I meet at the car show) had an MGB perhaps her friend has a Harley now.... wink. And like David one of the plastic clips broke that hold the legs in place. I find the workmate to be a nice portable workstation and clamping device. It works great for a lot of various smaller jobs. I find that for clamping larger/heavier items it lacks clamping strength. I use the jawhorse for those. The jawhorse is great for clamping large pieces of lumber, full sheets of plywood, lengths of piping, etc. If I had to choose one over the other for general use I think it would be the workmate. It's cheaper than a jawhorse too. B&D still sells replacement parts for any of the plastic pieces on the workmate too. My 2cents. Gerard C, also a lister, has a nice web page ( linked to in Rick's post) and sells what appears to be a beautifully made kit. I cannot speak directly of any of the currently available kits; however, I have one of the last of Paul A's kits and can address some small issues with it. First, I went with a gear reduction starter, a bit pricey but it makes for less modification to the bell housing. I would do it again. I'm using a 1275 slave cylinder along with a tandem master re-sleeved to 3/4" by Sierra and their adjustable pushrod (or did I get that from Paul?) The only problem seems to be clearance between the slave cylinder and the frame. I think Gerard has a solution for this, so you should talk to him. Check carefully before you drop the engine and transmission in for good. My local guy would have been happy to sell me a really trick slave cylinder that fits concentric with the shaft inside the bell housing. A short piece of hydraulic hose can provide you with a remote bleeder which will be very convenient at those times you need to bleed the line. Clearance at the U-joint at the front end of the drive shaft, may also be a challenge. This has been discussed on the list. With everything in place, I don't have sufficient clearance between the pulley and the transverse frame rail to install a new fan belt. This may be related to having a 1275 in a bugeye, and using a Mini-Cooper S style harmonic damper. It may or may not have anything to do with the 5-speed conversion. It will not be fun to change the fan belt! I would definitely recommend having your flywheel converted to use the Datsun clutch, if only for availability of spares. So will try to get the thoughts organized. Lin's questions: The color in the video is close but this color makes slight changes depending on the light. I am not sure I have ever had a picture that I feel really shows the color but will see what I can find for you. In more recent years I have seen a few cars painted "Nevada Beige" that were almost brown. However if you can find the older PPG Foreign Car color chips / codes they are almost a perfect match to the color on my car. The paint formula differers only by one drop of paint. The most glaring error in the video is that I said the car took Best of Show in a number of events, that should have been First in Class. Below is some information on how the video was made and perhaps I can be excused for such a mistake. The other sort of errors are in the sequence of photos. Some of the pictures from the frame up are shown with the original conversion and visa versa. At the time this video was made my first wife, Annice, was still alive. She was very much into the car as some of the older listers are aware. She frequently, almost daily, contributed to the list. Background on the video: I think this video was shot in 2001 or 2002, I could be wrong, although the disk has a copy write of 2005. This was one in a series of 10 or 12 shows that he was hoping to sell to one of the cable video shows. That was not successful so he has been selling individual disk. All the raw video was shot in about three hours and was an unscripted interview. J. Daniel Jones ask questions and what you see are the off the cuff answers. All of the still shots are from my collection of posters and photos. After the raw video shoot I had no input into the final product and did not see it until it was finished. I would have liked to correct my error and had the still photos arranged in a different order but I suspect that most of the video shows we see suffer from this same condition. The video quality is excellent and I always enjoy my dealings and conversations with Daniel. I tend to agree with your opinion :-) Hal, My kit is a similar design to The kit you have (Morriservice), but with a number of improvements over the original. I also recommend and supply the gear reduction starters. The impetus for the 3/4" MC for disc brake conversion in early Spridgets was from me back around 2007, and developed in concert with Joe at Sierra. Paul never offered those. If you check the Sierra Specialty web site, you'll see Joe makes a point of mentioning the development. However, Joe retired on December 31st, so these master cylinders will now only be available through me from now on. Lots of info here: http://www.gerardsgarage.com/Garage/Tech/DbrakeUg.htm The clutch slave issue is a hard one to get around, given the physical limitations, but there are solutions. I have also addressed the driveshaft yoke issue with a simple solution, as well as an alternate solution to the heater plenum modification. Many people peter not to modify the original sheet metal. My kit comes with instructions and templates on how to avoid it. Overall, I have made enormous improvements in quality, not limited to, but especially with the CNC parts. Jeff Schlemmer, who removed his Rivergate in favor of my adapter plate and seal kit, gives a glowing recommendation on the MG Experience Forum. For those of you that know Jeff, you know he's super particular about fit and tolerances. Since your engine position is determined by the front motor mounts, your issue with the pulley has no bearing on the kit installed. The clearance is a common issue with a 1275 and the thicker damper pulley. Cheers! Are you planning on keeping the book ;-) I've never been to one of these "real" auctions, but being only a 6-1/2 hour drive away I thought it would be a once-in-a-lifetime "bucket list" kind of thing - drive down the morning of the preview, spend the night, go to the morning of the first day of the auction, then drive back home that afternoon/evening. But it looks like I'd have to go thru all the work of being set-up as a "real bidder" to actually get in to see the auction (bank check and such - and once they look at my bank balance they probably wouldn't even sell me a soda much less let me in) and I don't know if it is worth all that plus $150 to cross something off a list...but it would be interesting Dean Swanson "62 mkII Sprite Holly Springs, NC _____ Sent: Friday, January 18, 2013 10:36 PM Subject: Re: [Spridgets] The Bruce Weiner Microcar Museum Auction The book is 100 pages and has estimated values of the stuff being auctioned. So - how to efficiently strip down a Midget, get all the parts off and out of it and scrap the front half? Anything on the front body area worth salvaging? If the floors are solid I'll cut them out and keep them. Maybe the sections around the front turn signals so they can be welded into RB car for conversion to chrome or bumperless? Anything else? As to efficient ways to strip it, the fenders are toast anyway so I could use my sawzall and just start cutting. Anyone got a nice process for getting it done quick and dirty? Message-ID: I've got a fairly bad oil leak while driving down the road. It's bad enough that I have oil seeping in through the seams in front of the seats (which is why I haven't installed carpet yet.) When I park on an incline, I'll get a several foot wide puddle running out of the transmission tunnel. The engine otherwise seems to run well, with minimal smoke at the tailpipe, smooth idle and power delivery. It doesn't seem to leak when the car is not running. Looks to be coming out the rear main seal area. My understanding is that I have a 1098 block with a 1275 head. It still has the dual SU carbs and pancake pcv valve. The PO is the one that built it, but sold it to me as an unfinished project a number of years ago without putting any real miles on it, so rebuild quality is an unknown. I've since worked on pretty much every part of the car except the engine, so I'm a bit of a newbie on what to look for. Could it be incorrect crankcase ventilation? How would I go about diagnosing such a thing? I love that car. Frank drove PIECES out to see me in 1999, carrying an engine in the passenger footwell 1000 miles to deliver to Gary Speckman at Road America (I have a bunch of pics somewhere). We bombed around in my Bugeye and PIECES for 3 days, meeting Dave Woerpel and Peter C for the first time (for Frank), driving up to Elkhart Lake in PIECES and my BGT for the Fall Festival and getting our first laps at Road America. I remember that car through its build as well as its repaint and sale. I offered to buy it many times when it wasn't for sale and had to refuse it when it was. With my oldest son's car I am up to something like 10 cars here, several not running (and am about to add motorcycle #3) or I would buy it in a heartbeat at $6500. I still may. No insulation so studded out all walls, insulation, drywallnew electrical, new plumbing, new kitchen cabinets, paint and finish, all new trim and interior doors, well you know the drill.Lots of money and the place looks fabulous. However, Busy my '8 Sprit got less than 100 miles on him all last year. Refurbishing tasks on the back burner. Now we are on to kitchen. Old floor is out, new underlayment in I contracted that job and glad I did.I ordered new hardwood last night and that comes next weekend. All new appliances are awaiting delivery and she is down to final countertop choices, all expensive. Cabinet doors to be refaced and painted white. And the list goes on. I will let her know after kitchen is done and before bathroom starts that I bought a Bugeye. I know it won't go well but project will be self funding once I get Bugsy my '68 Sprite sold. I know well while not a high probability, but it's a possibility. Other factor could be that the cast rear plates can fracture through the crank and oil pump cover opening, and this will cause a serious leak also. It's also possible that the oil pump cover is not well sealed on both sides. When it leaks that much oil, these are things to look at carefully as possibilities. it could also be a damaged are poorly installed half moon seal. I find a lot of people do not understand how that scroll seal is supposed to function and don't give this the attention required. There are cases when nothing will cure it short of a complete teardown and machining, but I have another solution. I make a rear lip seal conversion that actually works. This is NOT the same one that some may have seen before. I have a lot of people who have had a lot of success with this conversion kit. It fits with or without the 5 speed kit. The price was discounted because of it. When I took delivery of it, I had a friend follow me home down the Interstate, driving one of my cars. At one point during the trip he pulled up next to me and signaled me to pull over. At that exact moment I heard what sounded like a clattering oil pump and/or rod and main bearings. I glanced down at the oil pressure gauge and it was approaching zero. Evidently I was blowing oil all over the windshield of the my own car being driven behind me. I shut the Bugeye down immediately and coasted to a stop on the shoulder. I popped the bonnet and checked the dip stick, which was dry. I sent my friend down the road to purchase a few quarts of oil. While I waited on the side of the Interstate, I sat there staring at the engine and I noticed that some dumb-ass previous owner or mechanic had installed the front tappet chest cover upside down, and had connected the breather tube on the cover directly to the gooseneck breather connection on the valve cover. Basically there was NO breathing going on, except out the rear seal. I cut the hose loose right then and there, and after filling it with 3.5 quarts of oil, I drove home the rest of the way with no problems. The car has never leaked a drop since. I did however, end up changing the rod bearings before recently ditching the 948. This setup has worked for 7(!) years for me on a very high compression engine that only has ambient venting, not positive venting. I pulled apart the PCV and it was saturated with oil. The rubber diaphragm looked okay, no tears or holes. I will try cleaning this up as a first step, but I'm thinking all this oil might indicate another problem? I'll also check the oil pan gasket as mentioned, make sure that's not leaking. Gerard, your seal kit looks great. If the other fixes don't work out, I'll give it a go. Do you have any pictures or instructions online? Please make sure that the company you are dealing with is the company that will be doing the shipping. Many times, they contract it out and you get crap for service and a messed up car upon arrival. Be very clear on your timeline....when you want it picked up and when you want it delivered. They purposely get there sooner than you arrive and hold your car for ransom and storage costs. Do yourself a favor and pay the $1100 - $1300 it will cost and get a reputable transport company. Call the references and read the feedback carefully. Question them on any negative responses. This car was given to my father by one of his customers and sat behind his shop for awhile. The previous owner said that the car was running when they stopped driving it. I brought it home and started working on it. The car was complete when I got it except for a battery. Belts, hoses, tires, exhaust, folding top cloth and seat upholstery are in bad condition. I had the wheels sandblasted and repainted, and bought new tires and tubes. I bought another pair of seats that had good upholstery, some replacement carpet pieces and some spare tailights and such. I took a lot of photographs of my disassembly so I could get the wires and linkages and so forth back in place. The photos dont show the hood but I have the hood and grille inside my house. I discovered that the engine would not rotate so I eventually pulled the engine out and disassembled it. I found water on top of a couple of the pistons and they were frozen in the cylinders. My plan was to either bore the block and buy oversize rings and pistons, or find another block and buy new standard pistons. The car is in my garage in Dallas. Email me off list if you have questions or want more information or photos. I don't know what a proper price is but I'll start at $500 OBRO. http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a370/bjd70/Cars/Dsc_0016b.jpg http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a370/bjd70/Cars/Dsc_0014b.jpg From WeslakeMonza1330 at aol.com Thu Jan 31 10:58:00 2013 From: WeslakeMonza1330 at aol.com (WeslakeMonza1330 at aol.com) Date: Thu, 31 Jan 2013 12:58:00 -0500 (EST) Subject: [Spridgets] For Sale- my 1973 Midget project car Message-ID: A 1275cc crank and rods are probably worth US$250 maybe a lot more so be sure you get a realistic value for the car. The hose from the vapor separator is pulling way too much air. I fixed the problem by inserting a restrictor in the hose to the oil separator, and sealing off the rest of the engine (valve cover and oil filler cap). To make the restrictor, I got a brass 1/2" double hose barb, packed it with epoxy putty, and drilled a 1/16" hole through the putty after it had set. That cleared up a lot of leaking and stopped pulling oil into the intake plumbing. Cheers, Dave
