Message-ID: <1349162096.58070.YahooMailNeo@web125804.mail.ne1.yahoo.com> Greetings People,. I hope everyone is well....it's been a while since I posted.. I think one of my tie rods might be knackered.... When I turn the steering wheel a little, just a tiny bit, there is an audible clunk coming from the area of the tie rod. I had hoped it was the tie rod end, but when I grip the inner end of the tie rod through the rubber gaiter, I can feel the ball move in its socket... Can this ball/socket joint be tightened to take up the play and silence the clunk? I read in the manual that there are shims in here somewhere... I have not had one apart before so am not thoroughly familiar with it all yet... any one got any tips? Piece of cake. I used a Harbor Freight 22mm 1/2" drive socket as a perfect drift, a big mf hammer, and a 1 1/4" socket upturned beneath the arm as a receiver of the driven bushing. Replacement was the reverse of removal. Sure the socket takes a whupping, but it's HF, so no loss. No heat, no cutting, just BFH. ------------------------ spridgets at autox.team.net Donate: http://www.team.net/donate.html Suggested annual donation: $12.75 Archive: http://www.team.net/archive Forums: http://www.team.net/forums Unsubscribe/Manage: http://autox.team.net/mailman/options/spridgets/a_d_webster at yahoo.com.au From corvallis at peoplepc.com Tue Oct 2 04:32:00 2012 From: corvallis at peoplepc.com (corvallis at peoplepc.com) Date: Tue, 2 Oct 2012 03:32:00 -0700 Subject: [Spridgets] More fire progress In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: <5A182B2158D24F28B899DCA00874F67D@spider> Don't say that!! Third, are you asking about 185/60-13s? or 165/80-13? a 165/80 will fit standard wheels and both square and round arch, a 185/60-13 will fit a wider rim, and a round arch without modification (depending on the wheel offset), but not a square arch without some beating and bending. 185/60-13s are a rare animal, I just bought a set of Toyo R888s for the MKII ~$650 US, it was either those or Hoosiers, and I street drive the MKII, so circumferential grooves don't work for me-Hoosiers out. Can you be confident that the correct steel repair panels were used by someone who didn't even replace the jacking point rubbers in the sills. Sure the car has had parts money spent on it but why fit a downdraught weber in the first place? I'll bet the grille was sprayed matt black fitted to the car and the owner while masking around the front fenders forgot to mask under the hood and couldn't be bothered to clear up the overspray afterwards. The owner doesn't say anything like 'back to bare metal' in his advert. I think I'd want to have a really good look around the car, along with a test drive and still offer less money. ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease, is a deadly illness with no known cause or cure. It affects the motor neurons in a person's brain and spinal cord. When the motor neurons die, the muscles waste away. Gradually, a person is robbed of the ability to walk, speak, eat, and eventually breathe. All the while, the mind remains sharp and aware of the total paralysis that is quickly setting in. Upon diagnosis, doctors give ALS patients only two to five years to live. And that's why we are walking, for those who can't. Our efforts will help The ALS Association fund research to find the cause and cure of Lou Gehrig's Disease, as well as support services for people affected by it. Our team fundraising goal is $1000, and I hope you'll help us reach it. By making a one-time, tax-deductible donation, you can truly make a difference in the fight against ALS. Just visit our online fundraising website listed below to make a donation. Any amount you feel comfortable giving is deeply appreciated. Every dime makes a difference! With your support, we can make a positive impact today in the lives of those living with Lou Gehrig's Disease. Sincerely, Kristi, Lambert and Larry P.S. Please forward this email to as many people as possible and encourage them to donate too! ________________________________________ About The ALS Association The ALS Association is the only non-profit organization fighting Lou Gehrig's Disease on every front. Or am I just overthinking the whole thing (as usual)? ----------------------------------------------------------------- Probably overthinking it some... Do you have disk brakes on the front? If so your front width may be a bit wider now than the rear anyway. I know that when you convert from front drums to disks, the track changes to a little bit wider. I don't know if this was engineered out when the front disks came on the cars from the factory. If you have the 1/4 elliptic rear springs, probably not. Have you measured the track both front and rear? I had to space out the fronts due to the tire size (205/60/13) rubbing when the wheels are at full lock in either direction. Your tires probably won't rub without spacers. I needed them on the rear to clear the springs. I'm running 1/2 inch spacers and also had to put in longer studs. -- Kent 1960 Bugeye 1983 Garage full of spridget parts! 2010 Arrow shed full of excess spridget parts!!! Therefore, as I'm adding to the rear track, the OVERSTEER should increase. The car is pretty neutral right now as opposed to the BE (wonderful large amounts of oversteer), so a bit more oversteer is fine with me as it'll make the MKII feel more like the BE. The owner Joe Ferrer did a great job explaining vapor lock on a 72 TRV Vixen. The cars owner was driving to California from the Bronx but it would stop starting after a run. Joe saw that it didnt have a heat shield on the car and Joe traced out the carb area to manufacture a heat shield at a sign show because it was needed in 2 hrs. What I like the best was the graphics related to the engine heat causing the fuel to vaporize and prevent the car from running. Not sure if the fabricated heat shield should have been made of aluminum but it was fairly thick so I am only guessing it will do the job. When I rebuilt my '71 Midget, I had to replace one wheel box. It appears to have a different "ratio" than the originals, so that the sweep of the blade takes it from the cowl/windshield frame across the windshield to the cowl/windshield frame on the other side (and the other two blades just travel across the windshield). Still irritated at it; haven't even started to try to source a good replacement, much less pull the dash apart to replace it (It's the center one). If anyone has a spare; let me know! But the kind of ice cream varies so, every night, after we've eaten, the whole family votes on which kind of ice cream we should have and I drive down to the store to get it. It's also a fact that I recently purchased a new Pontiac and since then my trips to the store have created a problem. You see, every time I buy vanilla ice cream, when I start back from the store my car won't start. If I get any other kind of ice cream, the car starts just fine. I want you to know I'm serious about this question, no matter > how silly it sounds: 'What is there about a Pontiac that makes it not start when I get vanilla ice cream, and easy to start whenever I get any other kind?'" > > The Pontiac President was understandably skeptical about the letter, but sent an engineer to check it out anyway. The latter was surprised to be greeted by a successful, obviously well educated man in a fine neighborhood. He had arranged to meet the man just after dinner time, so the two hopped into the car and drove to the ice cream store. It was vanilla ice cream that night and, sure enough, after they came back to the car, it wouldn't start. > > The engineer returned for three more nights. The first night, the man got chocolate. The car started. The second night, he got strawberry. The car started. The third night he ordered vanilla. The car failed to start. > > Now the engineer, being a logical man, refused to believe that this man's car was allergic to vanilla ice cream. He arranged, therefore, to continue his visits for as long as it took to solve the problem. And toward this end he began to take notes: he jotted down all sorts of data, time of day, type of gas used, time to drive back and forth, etc. > > In a short time, he had a clue: the man took less time to buy vanilla than any other flavor. Why? The answer was in the layout of the store. > > Vanilla, being the most popular flavor, was in a separate case at the front of the store for quick pickup. All the other flavors were kept in the back of the store at a different counter where it took considerably longer to find the flavor and get checked out. > > Now the question for the engineer was why the car wouldn't start when it took less time. Once time became the problem -- not the vanilla ice cream -- the engineer quickly came up with the answer: vapor lock. It was happening every night, but the extra time taken to get the other flavors allowed the engine to cool down sufficiently to start. When the man got vanilla, the engine was still too hot for the vapor lock to dissipate. > > Moral of the story: Even insane looking problems are sometimes real. It would be a better alternative than the big box stores who dictate specs to the manufacturer so they can lower the price, which is almost exclusively by sacrificing quality. They should also be able to offer hands-on advice and provide service when needed. There is a whole world outside of the Home Depots/CostCo's/SamsClubs/Etc. filled with alternatives and selection. jay fishbein wallingford, ct ________________________________ From: JohnD To: Spridgets Sent: Tue, October 23, 2012 3:11:08 PM Subject: [Spridgets] Generators--No LBC content You guys always seem to know what to buy and what to avoid... My brother recently bought a Porsche Boxster on ebay from California. It was only $700 to have it transported to North Carolina. He ended up getting a good deal on that car, despite not having seen it first hand. I think it had 80k miles and it went for ~$8700. He had to do some minor work to it. Lost power last night about 730. Fortunately I didn't return the generator that we bought last year for Irene, but didn't need to use then. Bought 20 gallons for it Sunday. :-) Most of Long Island, 90% + is without power. Thousand of trees are down. Anything near the shoreline is devastated. I just talked to Mike Rowe. They didn't fair as well. Pretty bad is how he put it. Flooded the bottom 4 feet of their house, knocked down a 1st floor wall. lost some of their bulkhead. Most of his tools and Spridget parts are ruined. The Holy Sprite is safe and sound. They were in Boston over the weekend, but a neighbor moved it to higher ground. PECO says they hope to get power back in the AM. No generators to be had and no D cell batteries either. Zero rated sleeping bags on the water bed keeps us warm, and the hot tub lid blew open and filled with leaves. I can see the third night being a major PITA. Jodie was very nervous. I thought it was just like having power, but darker. I bought a Coleman propane stove that we needed anyway. It was the last one Walmart had. Yesterday I heated the water and poured it thru the coffee maker for a full pot. We went out yesterday afternoon to buy more ice for the fridge and when we got home with it, the lights were back on. Now I have ice but I'm out of Scotch. (It's better the other way 'round.) Oh well... Hope things get better soon for all those still out. Keep lotsa candles and matches on hand. Generators get scarce after a storm around here. Our main problems are water and people (looters). You guys got the cold to deal with, too. Stay warm and dry. You'll probably witness the best in people and the worst in people. These things, as they say, "reveal character". In a few months there will be deals on generators on craigslist. In the near future there will be guys with trailer loads of Chinese generators. Avoid those if you can, although the Diesel ones are Yanmar clones and are not bad compared to the gas ones. I've walked streets where nice $200k houses were reduced to piles of 2x4s and rubble. I can empathize. Stay safe and prepared. Get out if directed to do so. For a while, back in the late 80s & early 90s, DB 2s, 4s, 5s & 6s were going for well under $10K! I've always lusted after a DB4 or a DB5, in Vantage or GT tune. Too bad I couldn't afford one when they were sort of affordable!
