He has also performed quite a few jobs on my car - and a couple on Larry's Blue Phoenix if memory serves. Not afraid to work (and make a few $$ to put toward his first car), he has been helping his next-door neighbor quite a bit recently. The neighbor is preparing to sell his house, so Kyle's been cleaning up the house and yard. Last Saturday, after helping load a van with jukeboxes and furniture to haul cross town, Chuck (the neighbor) told Kyle that he wanted to give him one of his project cars - a 1975 MGB. I don't know that much about it yet as it is currently covered with bungee'd up tarps, but it is a complete car that apparently "ran when parked". Kyle is thrilled to say the least. It needs some minor rust repair (Kyle: "Cool! I can learn to weld now") to the doglegs behind the doors. Not sure what else it needs yet, but Kyle is ready to dive in and build himself a sportscar over the next few months. With his determination - and barring any major pitfalls - he may just pull it off and be driving it for part of his senior year in high school next year. Actually, I completely misstated the purpose of the spacer. It is the amount of pressure plate travel after the throw out begins to move it. You need the correct minimum play so you do not overdrive the pressure plate. The clutch will fail very rapidly if that happens. LOL ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The House At Checkpoint Charlie A Little West Berlin Museum Celebrates The Ingenuity Of Those Who Conquered The Wall December 07, 1986|By Article by Paul Martin, a freelance writer based in Riverside. The exploit, and the Sprite, received international publicity. Several months later Norbert Konrad tried the same stunt. Although born in Germany, Konrad had an Argentine passport. He had fallen in love with an East German woman, Helga Werner, but the authorities refused permission for her to emigrate. Although concerned that the guards at Checkpoint Charlie might be particularly suspicious of sports cars, Konrad rented an Austin-Healey Sprite at a West Berlin agency. As Helga huddled in the trunk, Konrad drove toward the East Berlin checkpoint. En route, an East Berlin policeman stopped him; Konrad was certain he had been discovered. He relaxed when the policeman pointed to a loose fitting on the exhaust pipe and told him to have it repaired. Konrad gladly fixed it, then resumed his drive. At the checkpoint Konrad showed his passport, and the guard directed him to the customs office. Instead, Konrad stepped on the gas, raced for the barrier, ducked his head under the 37 1/2-inch-high horizontal pole and skidded into West Berlin. Konrad later returned the car to the rental agency and was incredulous when he learned it was the same vehicle Heinz Meixner had used. Several weeks later Konrad and Werner were married. The trick worked twice, but no more. To prevent a third Sprite escape, the East Germans embedded steel bars in the concrete beneath the barrier. http://articles.chicagotribune.com/1986-12-07/features/8604010562_1_rainer-hildebrandt-west-berlin-east-berlin/3 Tim Collins http://www.flickr.com/photos/12702006 at N07/sets/ From doug_altman at yahoo.com Sat May 5 11:53:27 2012 From: doug_altman at yahoo.com (Doug Altman) Date: Sat, 5 May 2012 10:53:27 -0700 (PDT) Subject: [Spridgets] Distributor Rebuild Message-ID: <1336240407.49981.YahooMailNeo@web125702.mail.ne1.yahoo.com> Guys and Gals - Remember at Elkhart Lake we had a talk by Jeff Schlemmer from Advanced Distributors? If they want, the government can increase gas taxes faster than you can fill a Spridget. The gallon (abbreviation "gal"),[1] with the US and imperial gallon, is a measure of volume. Historically it has had many definitions, but there are three definitions in current use: the imperial gallon (? 4.546 L) which since metrication is used colloquially in the United Kingdom and semi-officially within Canada, the United States (liquid) gallon (? 3.79 L), and the lesser used U.S. dry gallon (? 4.40 L). The gallon, be it the imperial or U.S. gallon, is sometimes found in other English-speaking countries. Michael Rowe >A friend sent this to me. So the conversion in this country would actually be 62.8 mpg in the US. Still pretty good mileage but it is also a diesel. Europe has different restrictions on diesel emissions. See: http://www.dieselnet.com/standards/ You can check the differences. The EPA's "Clean Air" standards are more stringent for cars than the European standards. The whole thing boils down to a bloated, runaway bureaucracy in this country that is throttling us with poorly conceived regulations resulting in nasty unintended consequences. Cheers!! I know they do a classic boat show in NJ. We need to combine that with a British car show somehow. BTW, Carlisle was awesome. I took my brother (who is restoring a '74 Midget) along with his son. It was their first time and they loved it. Weather was great. Flea market picken's were great. Huge show field turnout. I picked up a nice spare distributor and the driver side vent door that I was missing, plus a bunch of other goodies. My brother was able to find most of the important bits he needed for the Midget. In hind sight I should have had them drive the truck and I should have brought the Bugeye. Come to think of it I should have had the nephew drive the Bugeye. Could this be the start of clear weather pattern for Carlisle over the long term? Something that Frank is up to in the afterlife? Then a heavy cable going from the bottom terminal of the switch to the terminal on the starter. It's usually a post with a nut on it. That's it. The starter is grounded through the motor. There's no GR wire connected there, unless someone is using it as a hot lead for an accessory. Try taking the GR wire off, see if it helps. If not, disconnect the battery cable and the starter cable from the switch and touch them together. If the starter fires up, you've got a bad switch. The ones I use do use a jumper from the spade terminal to the main lug. The purpose of the small wire lug is to energize the solenoid, something you don't have with the Lucas starter. Didn't you tell me you had to install new brushes in that starter? I'd look at your other connections at the starter switch or perhaps how you installed the brushes (if that was done) Gerard On May 26, 2012, at 11:00 AM, spridgets-request at autox.team.net wrote: > Message: 2 > Date: Sat, 26 May 2012 07:15:53 -0400 > From: Philip Nase > To: "Spridgets at autox.team. The hot lead for the turn signals goes through the hazard flasher switch. When the hazard flasher switch is off you have juice to the turn signals. When the hazard flashers are turned on the switch opens up the power lead to the turn signals. Apparently the factory guys didn't want you to signal a turn if the hazards are on. :-) Rick Sent from my keyboard On May 29, 2012, at 11:18 AM, Peter Caldwell wrote: > The kid that works for me is very close to driving the 71 Midget I gave him. OSU's racing team, which is a collaboration of OSU and Duale Hochschule Baden-Wurttemberg-Ravensburg in Germany, received the first place overall award as well as three first place titles in engineering design, endurance, and the SAE Spirit of Excellence. There were 120 teams from around the world at this competition, entering 106 vehicles. Participants came from the United States, Canada, Austria, Germany, Finland, Singapore, South Korea, the United Kingdom and elsewhere. "This is the first time in the history of the Michigan race that a university has won for three consecutive years," said Robert Stone, professor and interim head of the School of Mechanical, Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering at OSU. "It's a great accomplishment." OSU's team, composed mostly of students from the College of Engineering, has been extraordinarily successful in Formula SAE racing in recent years. This sport is extremely popular in Europe, where almost every university sponsors a team, and OSU has also dominated many universities with strong teams in the Midwest, the historic home of the nation's automotive industry. Cars in Formula SAE racing are judged on such factors as cost, innovation, acceleration, design and other aspects. Students spend thousands of hours working on the vehicles and in the process learn skills in aerodynamics, chassis construction and mechanical engineering as well as business development and fund raising. Formula SAE racing is organized by the Society of Automotive Engineers.
