I have new bushings and fulcrum pin to install. I have a spring compressor, but it won't fit. I have the car on a jack stand and a jack under the A-arm which compresses the spring. If I jack higher, it lifts the car off the jackstand. I don't know if this is enough to unbolt and remove the fulcrum pin and bushings. Any suggestions from those of you who have done this before? Thanks. Block the rear wheels and raise the car up and put two jackstands under the front crossmember. If your car has front disk brakes unbolt the caliper from the spindle and tie it up out of the way. Put your jack under the a-frame and raise it until the a-frame starts to move up and the shock link is off of the bumper. Then remove the upper trunnion bolt. Now remove the cotter and fulcrum pins and kingpin and spindle assembly. Slowly lower the jack until the a-frame drops all the way. Then you can lever or kick the spring out. Now the inner bushings are easy to get at. When you're ready to put it back together remove the spring pan from the a-frame. Bolt the a-frame in and install the kingpin spindle assembly with your new fulcrum pin. Bolt the kingpin trunnion to the upper shock link. Then slide the spring up through the a-frame with the spring pan on the bottom and your jack underneath. Slowly raise the jack until you can get the pan bolts in. You might want to use some long bolts to temporarily pull the spring pan up until you can fit the stock bolts. Easier than it sounds, but it's still a long process. :-) Rick Sent from my keyboard On Jun 2, 2012, at 3:41 PM, lindalnhvt at nhvt.net wrote: > Hi Everyone, > First weekend off in 9 weeks and it's pouring rain so I'm working on the > Sprite and need some advice. > I have new bushings and fulcrum pin to install. But I would surmise that his claim that this was restored by a "British car specialist with over 30 years experience" is an exaggeration. Probably the weirdest thing that is evident in the pics is the radiator which appears to be permanently installed at an angle. What is interesting is that there was a fairly good attempt made at originality with certain original parts that are usually missing from other "original" cars. jay ________________________________ From: HealeyRick To: spridgets at autox.team.net; Mark Haynes Sent: Tue, June 5, 2012 10:43:03 AM Subject: Re: [Spridgets] Is this guy kidding? or is he just smoking something? I wouldn't doubt that the owner has the original HS1's but just opted not to install them. I have mine, but I run the HS2's. I don't care if he has a smoothcase or a ribcase but I would pay more if he had a 5 speed conversion. I'd rather drive my Sprite to get to an event rather than tow a trailer queen with a smooth case that I was afraid to put miles on. The steering arms were painted yellow, but I don't think all the way, just the end of the arms (subject for debate?). A really good concours Bugeye will have the original floor/tunnel rubber and the properly textured vinyl for the dash and seat covering. The original floor and tunnel rubber is, for all practical purposes, unobtanium. The best car I have seen in this regard was that blue bugeye at the Sprite jubilee that had the Judson supercharger in it. The owner's name escapes me right now (Eric?), but I believe he is in the MI Healey club. That was the nicest Bugeye I have ever seen and I'll bet $23k would not even get you close on that car. Nice car but, like you said, Mark, Air Cleaners should be the pancake filters, silverish finish. It has the wrong gas cap. They didn't come with a cigarette lighter. Were the steering arms painted yellow from the factory? Driver's door has a poor fit, paint is already rubbed off at the top. Is that rust down near the door hinge? Shouldn't the E brake handle be chrome? Poor carpet fit at top of tunnel. Not impressed with the upholstery job on the seat back. He's a bit young, but seems to know his stuff. My regular car mechanic recommends him, so I'll give him a try. He doesn't have the muffler in stock, due to the small input/output diameter, but will have it Tuesday. He thinks that he can get me an extra inch of ground clearance on the pipe, without having to "hammer" (what they call the ovaling process) pipe. I may have him do it anyway, to get every bit of clearance I can. He is getting a muffler that will slide up into the space between the tank and the rear wing, for more clearance there as well. As we were talking in his office, before I left, he reaches onto his bookcase, and pulls down a greasy book, and starts paging through it. I didn't give it much mind, until he says "I don't know if your car is in here or not" and tosses the book my direction. I politely tell him "no, but I wish it was". He says, "go ahead and take it, you are as close to needing it as anyone I'll ever know." I had some large diameter bar stock I stuck in one end (in the vise) and then bent it by sliding a lever bar into the other end of the muffler. Easier than it sounds. I've had cars that sit for years and they're fine when started up and driven. I don't like silicon brake fluid. But one of it's advantages is that it doesn't absorb moisture and cause issues during periods of long storage. I have a friend that runs a small car museum and he uses silicone in the antiques with hydraulic brakes for this very reason. I should have noted that I have been using silicon brake fluid for about 15 years, primarily because it does not eat paint. Started using silicon when we did the frame up in 1997. Everything was fine until early 2009 when I suddenly lost the brakes - the master cylinder seals had finally given up. I did a rebuild of the hydraulics then and have been unable to get any pedal pressure since. After a number of inquires and looking under the labels on the Moss and other parts it stated "Not for use with silicon brake fluid." At that time I was unable to find any supplier that had silicon compatible seals. Would be delighted to find some seals so as not to change the fluid. The spring sets were a little softer on the 65. Your car would likely sit a little lower in the rear with those springs. Most of the midyear cars sat low in the back! If you replace both sides it should sit level laterally and the handling should be OK but depending on your tire size, you may end up with a rub problem. A better choice might be to use the one leaf out of the 65 stack to replace the broken one in the 68 stack. The tension rating for one leaf should not affect the ride heigth or handling characteristics of the original set noticeably. If you need a whole stack, I have sets off of a 67 and a 69 that should be properly rated as they came from 1275 cars. -- Kent 1960 Bugeye 1983 Garage full of spridget parts! 2010 Arrow shed full of excess spridget parts!!! Grab the dizzy and see if it is a bit loose. I had a heckova time getting the clamp tight on my '77 Midget. At the very least, reset the timing and see how it runs. The dizzy bushings also wear, causing it to wobble. That's why you should always drop a drop of oil down the shaft when you replace the rotor. This Works Sprite as you may know has many aluminium body parts and Jon will do a wonderful job restoring it. I look forward to seeing the progress. So, Dave Booker was gracious enough to lend me the tires/wheels from his Midget. Drove it to his house, Got 3 on just fine, but on the driver's side front, we were having a hard time getting the lug nuts tight. Before even getting them close to being tight, I snapped a stud. Hmmm, crap. Next one, snap, and then when I was working on a third, was going ok, SNAP. WTH??? So I had to go back to my house and get my trailer to haul it home. I left the last stud loose for fear of snapping it. Fortunately I have spare studs at home. I have long and short ones. Not thinking (uh oh) about it too much I figure it doesn't matter so I put the long ones in. So Dave and I pop out the old and in with the new studs. Very easy thing to do, hammer out the old ones and pull the new ones in with a large nut over the stud followed by a lug nut and tighten. We repack the outer bearing while we had it out. We figure I have more extra studs, we may as well replace the passenger's side while we're at it. Well, I only had 3 more long ones, but 8 short ones, so we'll put the short ones in that side. Well, I put the outer bearing in backwards and while putting it on the car it wouldn't tighten properly. After pulling it back apart, we noticed that I hadn't put the outer bearing in properly, ie, thrust side in. Oops. I decided to repack the inner bearing since I had it apart, but buggered up the seal getting it out. We looked around online for seals and bearing kits, it was 5pm on a Saturday. Dave suggested we call a local parts store. They were still open so I called and he said he didn't have a seal but could have one on Monday. Great! I picked it up and it looked different, solid metal outer, where the one in it was rubber coated. And it was $11 where online ones were about $4, but it was from National Seal. But it fit fine. I also chased all the threads in the lug nuts with a 3/8 tap, there was quite a bit of crap that came out, both in the rest of his lug nuts and in mine. Fortunately I had kept the open lug nuts when I did my Front disk conversion, as I had ruined 3 of Dave's Chrome ones. I got it inspected with Dave's wheels and tires. It handles MUCH differently with 155/80 tires than with my 185/60 Comp T/A RA1s. It rides better, has more ground clearance, so I don't scrape the ground as much over bumps, but it slides around alot more, kinda fun, but different. When I went to put my Minilites with their shouldered lug nuts back on, I found that they wouldn't tighten all the way on the long studs. Crap. Good thing I still had 4 short ones left in the can. Swapped them out and it's good to go.` An experience, but we both learned from it and had some fun. Thanks for your help Dave! Brian S. Bugeyeracer finally resto'ed! Thanks to Frank C.! I had a similar oil leak on my MKII after I built the 948 for it, I solved it by putting a couple of silicone o-rings (Just small enough to be snug over the bolts of the tappet covers) on the bolts under the flat washers. I was going through oil pretty quickly, now its dry as a bone (sweet after all of the work I put into the car). RE: Tires- Are you running the Proxes RA1s or the BFG Comp TAs? I've got some almost worn out 185/60 Proxes RA1s on my BE and experience the same difference between the MKII on Sumitomo 175/70 HTR200s as you felt on the 155s. The MKII is slidey/slippery in the turns where the BE is rock solid when thrown about. I've been looking for some more RA1s, but after the rep said that they could do a short run for me and a couple of friends, he reneged and said that they couldn't do it, so I'm left with either the R888s or the Hoosiers, and I don't put it on the track, so the Hoosiers are out (10-12 heat cycles and they are slippery). As far as tires go, I have the BFG Comp Comp T/A R1's that I got a few years back. They were the Formula Ford Spec tire. I'm really debating my next set of tires. Don't really want to spend $700 on a set of tires for it that the 185/60 R888's would be. If I did do the 185/60's I am thinking about the Falken Ziex 912's. tires-easy.com has them for $60 each. Or maybe Federal SS-595, $70 each. I kinda like the idea of 175/70's. Reason being it would give me some more ground clearance in my lowered Bugeye. I'm constantly scraping my sacrificial exhaust pipe clamps. In and out of my driveway, speed bumps and over significant road dips. There doesn't seem to be any performance type tire in this size though. In this size, I'm kind of leaning towards the General Altimax RT's. Or maybe the Accelera Alpha, appears to be a Toyo T1R knockoff, H rated, billed as a UHP tire, pretty decent ratings. Brian S. Bugeyeracer finally resto'ed! > RE: Tires- > Are you running the Proxes RA1s or the BFG Comp TAs? Kyle is absolutely LOVING his new summer job. Luckily, my friend (who he works for) is loving having him there and says Kyle is doing great work. In case you missed the initial email, my 16 year old son Kyle is now working at a friend's body shop for the summer. The shop does the occasional insurance-funded crash repair work, but mostly does restorations, hotrods and customs. In the last few days, heB worked on theB a '63 Corvette convertible and the all steel (not a kit) body of a rumble seat equipped '34 Ford roadster hotrod. They still have many hours of sanding and prep time left on the '34 before it can go to the booth. There's also a 19fifty-something Chevy 4WD pickup in there for paint and body work. As of yesterday, they were planning to start putting the front endB sheet metalB back onto a chopped & channeled & sectioned & stretched '40 Ford custom today. B Kyle is getting to work on interesting cars and learning the art of body and paint workB from a truely talentedB perfectionist pro. He's supposed to start learning to weld sometime this week. My friend toldB Kyle that later in the summer, he'll be welcome to bring in his MGB and do the paint & body work himself in the shop. (Kyle already also acquired enough BRG paint to perform the color change on hisB burgandy colored car) B I told him last night that I was jealous because he gets to play with cool cars all summer and learn all kinds of stuff I know nothing about. He patted me on the shoulder and said "It's OK dad, I promise I'll teach you everything I learn". B Wow - I think I may have succeeded in cultivating another gearhead! Phil, Are you running spacer's with your rims? If you aren't you don't want long studs. I measured the studs and lug nuts I have. The short studs are 1.35 inches long. The long ones are 1.70. The thread length is the same on both. The extra length comes from extra shoulder length from the threads to the part which grabs the hub. That extra shoulder length will extend out past the hub. Sleeved lug nuts will bottom out on that shoulder before they snug the wheel up. That happened to me. I had to change out the longs ones that I put in when I snapped them off, back to the short ones. The lug nuts were as tight as I could get them and I the wheels wobbled. If you are using like 3/8 inch spacers, you might be ok. The lug nuts I am running have a shank diameter of .618 and a length of 1.44. The ones I bought, that don't fit my magnesium Minilites, have shank diameter of .678 and a overall length of 1.61. I opening for the lug nuts on my Minilites is about .62. Racers use longer studs if they are using spacers or open lug nuts. If the extra lug nuts i have will fit your rims, let me know, I can't use them. Brian S. Bugeyeracer finally resto'ed!
