The need is a function of tire width and rim offset, including spacer. I raced a sprite with < ellipticals and the panhard bar was essential, but it did reduce maximum speed in really high speed corners such as Road Atlanta #12 and the last turn before front straight at Sebring. The limit came in pretty suddenly until we finally determined that we were getting binding between the spring and the panhard bar for a very slight instant. The panahard bar wants to move in an arch and the spring want to move up and down in a straight line. On these high speed turns you have some pretty high pressure on the outside tire and these type of turns are where the sprite can make up time on other higher speed cars. To eliminate this you modify the spring mounts to allow a very slight amount of compliance. Lot's of good stuff there. One tip I learned recently involves drilling through stainless steel. Once in a while at work I have to drill holes in stainless steel cabinets to mount various things. Always hated it because the stainless is hard and quickly dulls a good bit. Cutting oil never seemed to help. I was on a job and had to mount some stainless cabinets. I was bemoaning the fact that drilling stainless was hard and the customer who was standing there said "Use dish soap". He went and got a bottle of Dawn dish soap and we used it as a cutting lube. Worked like a charm! It makes the stainless drill like mild steel. I now have a bottle on my truck. I was in the USAF in England in 1961. The salesman, Andrew Wilson-Gunn, came to my base and was taking orders. I ordered the car in December. On January 8 a buddy drove me to Donald Healey's dealership in Warwick and dropped me off. After completing the paper work I was shown my new shiny black Mark 2 Sprite. I was thrilled with it. I was about half way back to my base which was about 50 miles from Warwick when the car slowed down and just stopped running. It took a minute to realize that I was out of "petrol." There was not a house anywhere in view. A kindly passing driver stopped to ask if could help and then drove me ten miles to the next town and back again with fuel. The rest of the trip was uneventful but I will never forget that day. I still enjoy driving it. Long story, from which I'll spare you, but the price (paid by my father) was the cost of a major service, by our local Porsche dealership (Continental Cars on West Liberty Ave. in Dormont, PA just outside of Pittsburgh city limits). The original owner, a long-time family friend and employee of my father's, was our port engineer and had forgotten more about machinery than most of us can ever hope to learn. After meeting some of the mechanics, a couple of whom are still good friends of mine 48 years later, the original owner took me out in the car for a "pre-flight" check. By the time I got behind the wheel to drive the 20 miles to our home, I was pretty much intimidated & in awe of the car. After several miles of getting the feel of the car and as the roads became increasingly rural, I realized that I was having a LOT of fun driving this awesome GT car! The car's purpose was to transport me and my younger sister 30 miles (round trip) each day to and from high school, over a delightful series of twisting, plunging, rough-surfaced back roads. Miracle of miracles is that we all three (my sister, me and the 356) survived unscathed and I learned lessons in high-speed driving that are still serving me well today. We traded the car in, about 13 months later, at the Porsche dealership, on a '61 356B S-90 Roadster. I don't know where my old coupe ever ended-up. I understand it was sold to a U. of Pitt grad student, from the Philadelphia area, but that's the very last I ever hear of the car. Part of the reason for the car's moving on was that we were having it serviced at the local (Washington, PA) BMC/Jaguar dealer, Town & Country Cars. Unfortunately, the clowns they had working on it were completely un-qualified for Porsche work...........and I suspect they screwed-up a bunch of BMC/Jaguar products, too.............., but I did end up spending a lot of my school lunch hours prowling that dealership, which ultimately led me to buy a '66 MGB in August of '67. The rest, as they say, is history. :) Bud Osbourne -----Original Message----- From: spridgets-bounces at autox.team.net [mailto:spridgets-bounces at autox.team.net] On Behalf Of Allen Hefner Sent: Tuesday, December 11, 2012 11:11 AM To: Spridgets list Subject: [Spridgets] O.F. memory I was reading a car mag this morning in the reading room, and it occurred to me that all of us remember our first car. I found a pair of MGA's sitting along side a house. One was a 59 and the other a 61. There was one MGB engine in a box and several boxes of parts. I got the whole thing for $300. I do not remember the dude's name, but I do remember the expression on Dad's face. We draggeds them home with a rope and one of them basically had no brakes. Boy was that fun!! I was not yet 16 and had no license or permit. I cleaned out one side of the garage and began the long clean up. It was taking a while and soon I found girls and somehow the A's never got finished. I sold them about 3 years later for the same $300 I paid for them. In somewhat the same condition. The engine was built and some of the body work done. But still no where near being finished. Next up was a 73 Vega Kammback. Loved that car. Later on we got our First Midget. a 76 in 1978, used from a MG Dealer lot in Denver. Just need to cut those troublesome slots and I'll be home free. The extra length shaft is sacrificial. It's needed for fixturing while I cut the slots. You wouldn't believe the contraption that is needed to cut those dang slots! I sure hope I can cut those slots. Otherwise all the efforts up to this point will be for naught. You can see in the picture the old rotor slots start to wear in "v" shape. That's why I'm doing this. The believe is that the harder 7075 will be more robust with regard to wear. BTW, the link I posted the other night about all the how-to machining stuff was no coincidence. I've had to study up on techniques! Look at the shine on that 7075. Isn't it something? That's right off the lathe, no polishing or anything. The original Judson rotor was cast aluminum onto an interlocking shaft. I've had to come up with a more modern approach to mounting the rotor onto the shaft. I've cut a 3/4" long machine key on the back side and the two are interlocked with 1/4" square key. The shaft hole was reamed to a tight slip fit and I used Locktite 680 shaft mounting compound. The machinist at work assures me this will never come off. 680 is a really strong version of thread locker, designed for things that are never intended to be disassembled. Even if it did I'm still covered because the way things are designed the rotor is pushed against the key as a result of tightening the nut on the front of the shaft. This is my new favorite metal. It is as strong and hard as many steels yet it machines very easily. The presence of chromium in this alloy does not go unnoticed. The surface finish is spectacular. When cut with a fine tool you get that prismatic effect, like looking at a CD. This happens with other aluminum alloys to some extent, but they soon dull over after short time. 7075 stays bright. I can't believe I've wasted my whole life messing around with 6061. I'll have to get some more of this stuff. It's expensive from the big online vendors like McMaster or MSC, but there are a couple guys on ebay with very reasonable prices. In fact I've discovered ebay is the way to go for metal stock. You can often find oddball stuff that people have left over from big projects that they just want to get rid of. I was able to get four foot of bearing grade stainless steel rod like this. The shipping cost more than the rod! The same stuff from McMaster would have cost over $150. ------------------------------ ____________________________________________________________ Woman is 53 But Looks 25 Mom reveals 1 simple wrinkle trick that has angered doctors... http://thirdpartyoffers.netzero.net/TGL3231/50cf85c01e3215c051b0st02duc From kristi74midget at comcast.net Mon Dec 17 14:32:10 2012 From: kristi74midget at comcast.net (Kristi & Lambert) Date: Mon, 17 Dec 2012 16:32:10 -0500 Subject: [Spridgets] Fwd: MG Midget for sale References: <8CFAAAFF9A28FCA-1710-1F72D@Webmail-m120.sysops.aol.com> Message-ID: <688FA0CE-EBAE-4555-924E-8DC84506DA46@comcast.net> NFI please contact George if you are interested. The big gear reduced motor thingy was purchased from surplus distributor Herbach and Raedman, back around 2002. I think it cost about $60. A few years went by and I finally machined the elements needed to mount it to the lathe milling support and to create the arbor to hold the big blade (which I did not yet have!) Everything sort of came together when I was able to acquire the coveted "big saw blade" for $15 on ebay a few weeks ago. That blade new goes for $145 from Mcmaster.com. I could never justify that price! So what's going to happen? Well, in the headstock of the lathe is a big gear with a bunch of holes around its perimeter. These are marked off for the four 90 degree positions of the slot cuts. They lock the chuck into each position. I then crank down on the top handle and then move the saw across the cylinder with the other cross feed crank. I think it's going to take hours and hours to cut these slots. It would be nice to power feed, but I can't power feed if I have the chuck locked into position! Why am I doing two of these? Some lucky ebay winner gets the other rotor! Helps me pay for my psychologist! The article refers to Torlon 7130, but that has been superseded by 4435. You can get it from Drake Plastics. You need a 12"x4"x.187" sheet for a Sprite Judson. It's about $130. It will most likely need to be thickness planned slightly to fit the slots. So don't make a mistake cutting it! The old adage, "Cut once measure twice" definitely applies here. There is another rocket science material that I just read about in Machine Design magazine.. http://www.metcar.com/index.html Apparently they have some sort of carbon graphite designed for sliding vane applications. But I don't know how much it cost, where to get it, or even know what its properties are. Nor have I heard of any case studies of its use. BTW, These are the true "Rearden Metals" of this day and age. -----Original Message----- From: spridgets-bounces at autox.team.net [mailto:spridgets-bounces at autox.team.net] On Behalf Of Bob Kitterer Sent: Wednesday, December 19, 2012 8:25 PM To: Spridgets Subject: Re: [Spridgets] How it's made. The rotor in the brochure is not a Judson. Judson probably used the tangental orientation in an attempt to reduce vane wear. Being an automotive application the Judson probably runs hotter than the compressor in the brochure. Just my guess. BTW, I sold my Judsons several years ago. The vane pump in the article is something used in the oil & gas well industry. Hard to tell how big it is, but it probably spins slow compared to the Judson. It could be that Judson had a patent on that arrangement but I am doubtful of this. It could also be that the designer of that oil well gas pump does not know about the advantage of the, dare I say, "Swastika" looking arrangement. The thing is - this "side wear" is exactly why I am making a new rotor. All the used rotors I have seen have the slots worn out like this. The hope is that the hard 7075 material, combined with the more modern vane material will make this issue go away, or at least be greatly reduced. When the rotors wear out like this the unit becomes noisy, puts out less pressure, and any new vanes installed wear out quickly. BTW, I done did it... at least one rotor is almost completed. http://tinyurl.com/cyy5736 I still can't believe I pulled this off. It took a long time to cut those dang slots. 1.5 hours each. It appears that the surplus, gear reduced, drive motor that I had puchased may years ago for $60 was probably NOT designed to spin a 6" diameter, 3/16" saw blade, through almost 2" of aircraft grade aluminum. She's starting to make some unhappy noises now. Sort of an nasty backlashing sound coming from what I presume are the "planeteries". I've re-filled the lube in the gear box with some extra thick "STP like" oil additive I had laying around with the hope that this might help "cushion the blows" - or so to speak. I think it is the case that I will be very lucky if I am able to complete the final slot on the second rotor. I'm going to keen up the blade with my diamond stone, take very shallow cuts, and hope for the best. This final slot may take much longer than the 1.5 hours the others took. So it is with the way of these things. The almost perfect combination of a variety of complex interplays, taking years in coming together, for a few moments, and then suddenly a link in the chain breaks and all is lost. Thought I'd show you the mess that all this makes. The last slot has been cut. Yeeha. A little lesson learned (if you are ever doing something like this). Apply STP to the sides of the saw blade. It creates a hydrodynamic damper that helps reduce chatter. Made a big difference. I have one more operation that I am going to do with the big saw. I'm going to mill a tiny amount of the outside edge of the slot. On the worn out rotor this sharp edge would dig into the back side of the vane. Ok, I am not fast. Granted. This has been a weekends only job for the most part and has included rebuilding the superstructure as well as the internal workings. Yesterday I connected the hot and cold supplies and the drain to our new shower alcove, which is now about 90% finished. I ran both lines open into a 5 gallon bucket before connecting and noticed I have a lot less pressure on the hot side that I have on the cold side. I also see this at the kitchen sink and the bathroom vanity. This home is all electric so I have the big 50 gallon hot water tank located between the bath and the kitchen. Last August I attached a hose to the bottom of the tank and drained it and saw a lot of white material draining out with the water. Could the pressure problem be due to having deposits in the tank or at the output side of the tank? If so how do I fix this? Is there something else I could try or examine to find the cause of this problem? It's such a simple system I really don't see a lot that could go wrong here. Of course I have a combination of newer copper pipes and older steel pipes, and I know the steel could be getting rusty inside, however the cold supply to the new shower is steel and has full pressure. Thanks, this group is the most knowledgeable group I know of so that is why I am asking the question here. I guess next to the LBC this community has a lot to say about plumbing! I started out by removing the feed and output lines from the hot water tank. Visually everything looked fine. I connected a hose to the drain and drained the tank (all after turning off the big fat breaker of course). There was zero sediment this time, the hot water all emptied out clean and clear. Thinking (and answering emails) while this was draining I decided next to get a ball valve and some compression fittings and put a valve on the inlet side of the WH. After completing this I was able to turn house water back on, much to the delight of my family. Next I looked at the 3/4 inch nipple coming out of the hot side and wondered if a garden hose would fit - as some of you already know it does fit exactly. So I connected my drain hose to the Hot side nipple and turned off the drain valve, then opened the cold inlet side and let the tank fill. Once it filled I found very good pressure exiting the back door via my garden hose. So - no restriction in the WH. Next I hooked up the WH completely and turned it back on, of course there was the obligatory clean up from all the water I had let escape while I wasn't looking and I have to publicly praise my better half as she dug right in and helped me with the resulting sea of water that used to be her laundry room. Next I decided to take a closer look at the kitchen sink, having turned on the water in the bathroom vanity and having found very good pressure there. The kitchen sink had even less pressure than before, and what had been only the hot side was now both hot and cold trickling out with the valves wide open. So I took it apart. When I got back from Lowe's with the really nice pretty Delta kitchen faucet it was a simple matter of refitting is the reverse of removal. I am happy to report the problem is solved. So - again I thank you all and this issue is done and done! (Still have to get the shower finished, but that's just grouting the ceiling, attaching the shower panel. calking and installing the 60" x 72" shower door. Childs play compared to today! The total distance is broken up into legs and it should take you a particular amount of time to do the leg. However, you do not know the distance for the leg nor where the leg will end. You also do not know what route you will be taking, you are handed instructions less than a minute prior to your departure. The instructions are not the type that you can look at a map to determine where you are going, at least for the rallies I'v done. They also indicate a that when you get to a certain point what average speed to maintain. Now to the stop watches, I am familiar with three watch boards. There was one watch for total time, started at the beginning of the leg. One was the time for the current average speed. The third was the ending time for the last average speed section and for any specified stop times. These along with the instructions were all handled by the navigator who was also constantly doing calculations to determine if you "were on time" or not so the driver could correct their speed. By the way he was doing these calculations with a slide rule and using the dual Odometers for those who were really serious about these events. For those not familiar with TDS rallies the difference between the time it took you to do a leg and the it should have taken is your "error", early or late and can not be made up. The error for all legs are added up and the lowest error wins. At least that's the way it was in this neighborhood. Lot of fun, but girlfriend/navigator and I were usually not talking to each other by the end of a rally. "LEFT in 1.267 miles at 22 MPH". I meant "RIGHT". Yeah, but you said LEFT! One timepiece was a stopwatch that read in 1/100 minutes, rather than seconds. The other was a clock that read time of day and is not a stopwatch. If you have two stopwatches mounted on a plate, that would be used for racing. One is used to measure lap time the other can be used for overall race time, or so your pit crew can watch the guy in your mirror. For a rally, you synchronize the time of day clock to the official time of the rallymaster. The stop watch is basically to keep track of how fast you are going. If you go 1/2 mile in 60 seconds, you are going 30 miles an hour. Not exactly rocket science, but try going exactly 1/2 mile in exactly 60 seconds. The navigator is usually a very busy person. My rally computer would measure distance to 1/1000 of a mile (roughly 5.25 feet), so you get a pretty accurate measurement. Rallyes are timed to 1/100 minute, and you receive a penalty point for every 1/100 minute early or late to a checkpoint. It is much easier to do the math using 1/100 minute over seconds (or 10ths of seconds). Example - One leg of a rally is 8.449 miles long and the average speed assigned is 24 MPH. It should take you EXACTLY 2.84 minutes to complete that leg, but you don't know how long the leg is so you have to stay at the assigned average speed. The average speed can change in the middle of a leg as well. If you come in to the checkpoint at 2.86, you get a 2 point penalty. Top rallyes rarely assign more than a coupla points to the best participants over a hundred miles and 10 to 20 checkpoints. A very accurate stopwatch lets you quickly calculate how fast you are going so you can stay at the assigned average speed. Any variance has to be made up before you get to a checkpoint, but you don't know where they are. If you try this, please add a Stevens Rallye Indicator to complete your equipment. It is a circular, analog calculator that takes your odometer error into account for your measurements. Using a Stevens and a Halda will keep you in a vintage rally class. (/verbose) Hope this helps.
