I always used odorless paint thinner mixed with a pint of motor oil.  The
oil leaves a slight coating that may keep some rust from happening
instantly.  You can vary the amount of oil based on the number of gallons of
thinner.  I never really filled mine up, and it was cheep.  We tight!

I have heard of some people using Simple Green, but that would make your
parts smell like sassafras.
