[Spridgets] Dash pot refill

It happened again, at least the third time, maybe more:  My engine suddenly started missing pretty severely and erratically.  The dash pots were nearly empty (it happens every 800 miles or so), and refilling them stopped the missing.  Yet I have read that racers often run with them empty.  What is happening here?
