We're not alone...
IIRC - After WW2 the British Goverment didn't see much use for Sir Frank Whittles' Jet Engines, Decca Radar, and a few other things.. 
They went to Pratt & Whitney, RCA, Bendix and a few others.

Maybe it's our turn :-(

BTW - The British population had to raise money to keep the Hovercraft patents in the UK
