The only fuel pump issue that we have had is when our local Mr. Bad Wrench took out a properly working pump and replaced it with a new one, then tried to convince us that it also needed replacement the day we got our still ailing van back. They never once tried to put fuel into it. This was not the problem that we took it in for, and the replacement did not cure the problem. Our company policy is never to go below 1/2 tank, because we carry passengers in a desolate country and gas stations are often 250+ miles apart.

Our yard van runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, which is a hard life for any vehicle, but does not explain why it suffered brake failure three times in less than 30,000 miles. Nor does it explain why the dome lights tried to turn it into a crematorium, or why the headlights had deep fried wiring at least once a month.

Why are we debating about whether these problems "should" exist.  Unless
you are involved in the design of the vehicle, you need to accept that
they are real problems in the field and what you can do to mitigate their
effects.  Instead of asking "Why should I keep at least a 1/4 tank of
fuel?"  just do it and know that you are lengthening the life of your
pump.
