I would go to my local library, get the latest annual Consumers Report and check on the problems (or lack thereof) reported by users.

It's what I do..  anyone else??

Neither of these cars is "old", and I would expect her to drive it until it 
costs more to repair it than it is worth (like her current car), so resale 
is not an issue.   I have a similar question about used camper vans of much 
higher age and milage.
