'cause the air does not (hopefully) contain iron, the key ingredient to magnetism. The sound is likely the magnets resonating, or more simply the coils vibrating as they are pulsed.

As for non-ferrous metals becoming magnetic, ANY metal exposed to a field as great as 7 Tesla will have an induced surface charge.
