I bought Carolyn an Amazon Kindle with 3G for Christmas. It has been
terrific. The 3G works anywhere and is free. Using 3G books download a LOT
faster. You can also use your Amazon account to buy books and send them to
your Kindle. If the Kindle fails (they do!) Amazon has all your selections
stored so that when you get your free replacement you can upload everything
you had on it in about an hour. They also replaced our charger free when it
died. I got a Christmas special on it for $186. Check Amazon to see what
they are going for these days. It is one of the best pieces of modern
technology I've ever had. I've seen the iPhone and iPad versions and they
don't touch the Kindle for utility and quality.

Just my $.02

Cheers!!
