Is it possible for a newly-installed universal joint to get off-center?

There were no instructions, but I noticed numbers on the shaft and the 
grease fitting is on one end, not in the center like the rear one.  Is there 
a specific direction?  I assume that a freely-moving spider will center 
itself in use.
