Yes Targa is a plate (trophy) and was well known as the 44mile circuit
race around Scicily. Donald Healey and his team built a whole series of
Sprites and for 1965 a big Healey 3000.  Sprites were identified as
TFR.1 thro to TRF.7 which never raced. The video film 'Mountain Legend'
has detailed footage of the Healeys in the event, 4 laps I think. The
opening sequence is filmed with sound from a works rally 3000.

This event was on of 5 in the World Manufacturers Championship that also
included Daytona, Sebring, LeMans and ..........



A man called Jack Wheeler raced a Sprite at Targa Florio from 1966 to
about 1970!  Google him.



Triumph TR.4 invented the 'Surrey Top' that Porsche considered so good
that stole the idea and called it Targa Top.
