You nailed it, Peter...  still lots of play when it's pulled out.  I'll snug it up and try it in the morning.

Ed, pull choke out, then open bonnet and feel if you can pull even more on the cable... or push down on the choke linkage. I find that just that extra little bit.. maybe 1/8" matters a lot.
