The last big pickup I owned was a 1973. It had a lot of miles on it when I bought it so the first thing I did was pull the engine and overhaul it. It was 2 door, long/wide bed, 454, automatic. These were great trucks.

At one point in time it became difficult to buy new 1-tons so my dad bought a 3/4 ton to make a tow truck out of. It worked very well, its only shortcoming was its electric winch. Then we bought a full 1-ton to replace it. Now he has a Dodge diesel that has several hundred k miles on it. The drivetrains keep on going but the Dodge vehicle surrounding the drivetrain falls apart early.

I would not have a problem buying a new Ford or Chevy pickup right now. I would only buy a Dodge if I specifically needed its superior powertrain for towing.
