Actually, you shouldn't blame the poor innocent socks for the misdeeds 
of the evil gremlin that powers the washing machine. He captures one 
sock of a pair and holds it prisoner until you give up all hope of ever 
seeing it again and throw out the mate. Then it releases the hostage.
