[Spridgets] exhaust system bugeye

I am putting an exhaust on my bugeye that has a 1275cc engine.It has a  
flange that seats but there is a gap between the pieces holding the  
pipe in the manifold.The gap is about 1/16 inch and the bolts are very  
tight.Also the fuel line was running right next to the exhaust.I  
separated the two.Is the muffler supposed to be angled upward at the  
back of the car?
