I am picturing this type of air filter: http://www.spritespot.com/gallery/albums/Dans_Sprite/P1010022.jpg If so you could probably take a piece of all thread and put a nut on each side on the back plate and a nice acorn nut on the front. Just ditch the spot welded bits and transpose the hole positions from front to back.
