Leo,
Sorry, but unless you compare them side by side, under the exact same
conditions, your argument just doesn't stand up. When you look at the 2
stage I-R vs. a comparable, 2 stage Quincy (or Campbell-Hausfield, etc.)
there really isn't a whole lot of difference as relates to noise reduction.
The difference will be more likely to be in tone, rather than in decibels.
Really, the main differences, in new compressors, seems to be in material
quality, which relates to durability, not noise reduction.
Like I mentioned in a previous post, I've been exposed to/listened to,
literally, thousands of compressors of all shapes, sizes and manufacture
over the past 45 years and I can tell you for a fact that there is very
little difference in decibel level between different brands of the same size
2 stage units.
Bottom line is that noise level, real or imagined, is a very poor reason to
accept or reject a compressor. Better we should look at who built it, where
it was built, what it's cfm capacity is and what sort of warranty it
carries. The industrial-type units, manufactured in the good, old US of A
are going to be your best bet. The bargain priced units may look (dare I
say 'sound') pretty appealing, based solely on price, but they are a fool's
bargain in my opinion. But, in the words of one of my personal heroes &
mentors: "everybody vant someting for nuting".
