The width of track depends on which axle housing you have.
If you have the wire wheel housing then it will be about 1 inch 
less than a non wire wheel axle housing (about .5 inch on each side).

In this case, the width of track will not change because he is not changing
the axle housing.

The splines go into the differential carrier about 1 inch deep.  So I think
cutting about .5" from the axles tips as Bob suggested should work, but I
would measure and make sure you have 1" of spline left on those axles before
making the cut.

You could cut them with a saw, but you need to make a nice straight cut. If
you know someone with a metal lathe then that would be much better.
They could also put a nice taper chamfer on the end of the splines like the
original end is finished.
