[Spridgets] God must not want me to convert to wire wheels.

It's OK to fit them yourself but some of the things I've found....
(Rule 1 - let somebody else do it !!!! LOL)

Large screwdrivers tend to have square corners, these cut into the bead - as
do many 'builders' crow bars. (Grind the corners off!)
Lubricate both bead and rim (washing-up liquid or soft soap) when fitting.
If you can't get the bead over the rim fairly easily you are doing it wrong
(normally the opposing side isn't down in the wheel well or you have one of
the run-flat systems fitted.)
If the tyre has a coloured dot on the sidewall (typically yellow) it should
be aligned with the valve for better balance issues.
If you can't get the beads seated sufficiently to inflate the tyre put a
broad ratchet strap round the middle of the tyre and tighten it up a little.
This forces the beads into their seats. DO NOT inflate the tyre more than
needed to seat the beads with the ratchet strap on.
Over inflate the tyre by 20psi or so to seat the bead onto the rim then
lower the pressure to the correct running pressure.
Tyres 'wear in' directionally, if using pre-used ones try to keep them to
the same side. Some folk have issues over tyre rotation and wear because of
this.
Check for cracks and splits BEFORE fitting.
You can do your own (fairly decent) balancing job by using a jacked up free
turning the front hub and marking where the wheel comes to rest, down is
heaviest.
Try to avoid tyres with coloured lines round the tread or, if you have them,
use them as a mirror matching pair on one axle. (Give me a shout if you
need more info on this.)
