[Spridgets] Just can't figure these out (rant)

The past day or so here in Wisconsin have been fantastic!

So why not start up insurance, pull it out of storage and drive it?

Holy sh#$ it runs great, as is, better than when I parked it in October. I
decide to run it to work, give some rides at lunch hour, 50 or so miles in
24 hours, things are good!

Driving home I notice a smell, and it's not the usual oil one. Pop the hood
in the driveway and I now have a melted blob of wires from the alternator
and related trailing back.

I had no other warning, no lights, radio worked fine, gauges were OK.
Battery (about year old and tended to over the winter), was slightly
discharged according to my meter.

Sooo....
Do I splice new wires or invest in a new loom?
Get a new/ different alternator again? Or go safe and go back to a generator
and regulator?

I don't get it. I thought I squashed the charging problems about 250 miles
ago.

Any thoughts better than my wife's welcome..

Chris
