Nope, the RX-7 used a 12A but they didn't come out until the late 70's. I
think the Cosmo used a 12A and the early RX-3 used a 12A. That RX-3 was
probably where those came from -- the years would be right.
But you were right, the Miata used a piston engine.

The Miata uses a DOHC engine not a rotary. The RX-7 had a rotary but I think
they were late 70s and used a 12b engine. Mazda also had a little econobox
that ran a rotary way back when! I think that is what yours was from.
