Frank,
My guess would be that, with Fr. Jack especially, the old adage would apply: 
"it's not the gift that counts......it's the thought behind the gift".  I 
would think that personal items would be least appropriate (unless it's 
something needed for the Holy Sprite).  Why don't you & Diane take him out 
to that fancy restaurant, personally.  Although I don't know Father Jack, 
one of my best friends is our former pastor and I'm sure he'd appreciate 
that more than a gift certificate.
