Dave,
I would bet that the carb body is not the problem.  The throttle shafts are
softer than the bodies and on two pairs of carbs that I have disassembled
the shafts were visibly worn.  You can see and feel the step where the shaft
is worn.  So if you have a good shaft you can probabaly switch shafts and
solve th problem.  Or, call your favorite usual suspect and order up a pair
of shafts, 'cuz if one is worn the other one is most likely worn as well.
