Hello Bud,
Yes that was Tom Thrash, a well known and loved production racer, who died
during one of his qualifying sessions. All of the news is in this thread;

Has anyone heard any details as to the cause of the EP Mazda RX-7 crash at
Turn 8? What a tragedy. It almost seems to me like he lost his brakes coming
out of Turn 7. I did a roundy-round on the grass a couple of times at Turn 8,
but I didn't get near the tire wall.
