There was a piece in Popular Science within the last five years about a
mechanic in India that was scratching patterns in the combustion chamber of
small motor scooter engines ...and getting better mileage. There seemed to
be "a lack of money to rent a dyno to check it out" or "a big company there
was sorta interested in testing the theory." 

I think you could google the terms involved and come up with more.
