There is a simplifying trick to making cardboard templates.  Instead of 
trying to cut all edges to size/shape, cut your cardboard into smaller 
pieces, match the edge with as many pieces as make it easy and tape them 
together.  When you have the perimeter, stick the center together well 
enough to take the whole out and lay it on another piece.  In the simplest 
case - four straight sides not rectangular, cut four straight strips and 
tape the corners at the proper angles.
