First you tell anyone who wants the long input shaft Merkur box to get
stuffed and to keep their short input shaft box. You do this because the Merkur
box has closer ratios than the regular box but you can swap the long input
shaft for a short one to have the closer ratios but the right length shaft.

You buy at least the bellhousing.

You get a prop modified for the Ford box

You convert to a Ford clutch on a 1275 cover - 7.5" recommended though some
use a 7.25".

You fabricate your own brackets and stuff including the one to replaced the
chunk you cut out of the crossmember.

A bunch of other stuff.

It's an easy conversion as there is a kit to do it otherwise it's not easy.
The Ford box has a vast amount of tuning parts available for it including even
closer ratios than the Merkur box, a quickshift etc.

It's the best option for a performance gearbox by a long mile.

I seem to recall that the Merkur 5 speed is also relatively easy to
adapt to the 1275 Spridget. Can someone please tell me what all is
involved, and whether this is a good option?

Thanks,

Kate
