Max,
Find an attractive assistant and try a few more tests. Connect a voltmeter 
from the + side of the coil to ground (NOT the - side of the coil). You 
should see 12vdc when the ignition is on. Have your AA crank the engine over 
and see whether the voltage at the coil drops. If it does, let us know and 
we can give you more things to check.

Your car does NOT (or should not) have a ballast resistor. Only the 
1978-1979 Midgets should have ballast resistors. Either solenoid will work 
fine for you.
