Jack,

See Vizard (3rd ed. pp 222-3) to determine chamber vol for a given CR.  Or,
more correctly, CR for a given chamber vol.  Be sure you are aware of the
volume  between the dop of the piston and the deck of the block.
Determining Chamber Vol is not very straight forward.  Because of the
irregular shape of the chamber the easiest way is to measure.  You can use a
liquid (light oil works ok, or thin it with thinner.) Simply measure the
volume you need for your decided CR and squirt it into the chamber(plug in
and surface of the head level.)  Now you can measure directly how much needs
to come off the head to give you your desired volume.
Don't forget to check for valve-piston clearance before you bolt it together
and fire it up!
