[Spridgets] Which rear engine plate

I know that you guys have probably answered this question a million times.  However, I'm asking again.

The engine back plate that you put on, is it supposed to match the engine as in thick for 1275, thin with bent edge for 948 and 1098?  Or is the engine back plate supposed to match the transmission that will be used?

Why is there a difference and why must they be paired up?
