[Spridgets] OT- Beer

I have been known to brew a batch or two. The internet is your friend--
more than you ever want to know about home brewing-- easy ways, hard
ways, bottled, kegged...whatever you want. Don't have the links at my
office computer but Google is your friend.

I started brewing back when the only beer you could buy in most places
was what has been called "American Light Lager" (not to be confused with
"Lite" lager, a diet brew and major advertising industry success in this
country). (Also known as "swill" and "beer for men who like to pee a
lot").

I still brew at least every Thanksgiving (and may make a summer batch,
if Peter C asks nicely ;-) but there is less motivation now that most
parts of the country have retailers selling pretty damn good craftbrews.
Even if all you can get is Sam Adams Corporate Fermented Beverage,
that's at least real beer. Here in Michigan, we are blessed with some of
the finest micro-micro breweries in the country and home-brewing is only
worth the effort if you need a hobby. The classic starter book is the
one by Charley Papazian (Google again).

If you email me at home (johnsfolly AT gmail DOT com), I'll try to steer
you to a couple of suppliers and sites that are fun. But wait'll you
see what the corn-to-fuel movement has done to the price of barley, and
hops have gone up about 500% in the last 6 months.

All this talk about Nutria got me thinking about beer. Does anyone on
this
list brew their own beer? If so, would you be willing to share do's and
dont's off list with me. I've been thinking about brewing my own, what
with
all the Bud Light BS around here. I want some real beer, but around
here,
all you can get in the restaurants is Bud, Bud Light, blah, blah, blah.
Jesus, what a monopoly they have.
