IMHO.... 
For general 'spirited' all-round general driving, it's hard to beat a pair of 
tuned SU's with 1 to 1.5" stub stacks... mine are hidden inside a pair of 3.5" 
K&N filters... 

I also stuck a LCB extractor exhaust on my old '67 (when I had it) and it 
went like stink... didn't do so bad either in SCCA Solo II running against 1.8 
FI VW's....

I usually got 32-35 mpg overall....
