In the UK at least dog gear engagement is NOT the same as synchromesh gear
engagement thought both do a very similar job.

A dog box has dog gear engagement rather than synchro because it is tougher
and less easily damaged than synchromesh. I think dogs survive clutchless
gear changing (shifting) a lot better than synchros do. Of course your'e not
supposed to change gear in a synchro box without the clutch.

The photo just looked like a regular synchro.

Dog rings are next to the synchro and are what the synchro runs into to spin
the gears. For a picture see *http://tinyurl.com/3daba4*
Everyone pile on if I got that wrong.
