Sure....

oil sampling is part of what allowed less than four engined airplanes to begin flying
the big ponds. They could actually tell by
charting metals quantity over engine hrs,
when a motor would fail or when a specific part (fuel controller) needed replacement...
all by metal type/per cent quantity.

Today, on the most modern equipment, motors and systems "report" to a ground
maint monitor as they run/fly.

Many times a crew will land at a field where
no aircraft swap had been scheduled, only
to find out from the maint. people coming
aboard they've been assigned to another aircraft 'cause theirs either has, or is about
to have a problem.

It's gotten truly better and better in these
respects, no doubt about it.
