I am using the stock shifter can in the original location.

I did have to cut a slight curve out of it where 1st gears hits and 
another curve where reverse hits.
The hole now looks egg shaped. If you purchase an MGB shift gaiter, it 
fits in the egg hole, is accordian, not cupped like the Sprite gaiter, 
but it looks fine, works great and is available at your favorite LBC 
parts dealer.
I think this beats the witches hat approach.
