I just had an eye-opening experience with a 1980 Brit car. Yes it was, an
MGB, not a Spridget but I'd guess the rubber fuel line is the same if yours
is original.

We were working on the end of the fuel line that connects to the out tube
from the gas tank. The end was held on with an American hose clamp from
about five years ago, but the hose end was bone hard. I cut end off plus a
bit more. Put the it back on and tightened the hose clamp. Off he drove with
me following. Parked in front of his house, a mile later, and fuel was
running out from that connection; the line had split.

We were able to get it to my garage and staunch the flow. The whole hose was
bad because of the age, and there was no interior reinforcement .like the
webbing you find in fuel line bought at flaps. So, you might consider
replacing your existing (probably still original 5/8-inch) rubber fuel line
with something newer. .ask for fuel line. .bill in oregon
