[Spridgets] gas gauge question...

I have tried two different gas gauges in the beast ('65 MK III)...
Both indicate 1/2 full when I know the tank is almost empty.
I tried a gauge from a rubber bumper model and it just slowly goes up until 
it hits the peg at the Full mark.

Is there anything I can try before I drop the tank?

And if I drop the tank, what should I be aware of??
