The flasher relay uses the heat effect on a bi-metallic strip which causes it to flex and to operate as a switch. 'Regular' relays use a coil wound around a bit of metal to create a magnetic field that pulls an 'L' shaped piece of metal which operates the contacts. Hope this helps.. Dave G.
