[Spridgets] half shaft retainer

We pulled the rear brakes of the 73 midget today when my son noticed he 
could pull the half shaft right out of the left side. What is supposed 
to retain the half shafts? Looking at the manuals I have there doesn't 
appear to be any C clips. One drawing shows what looks like a screw and 
a nut and bolt on the flange...

I don't see that on either side???

So what keeps them from leaving the car while you're going down the 
road? Or going around a curve and having your track width suddenly increase?
