[Spridgets] rear oil seal

Hello all,  The latest issue of Practical Classics is in and there is  an 
article about leaky engines. In it the article shows a rear oil  seal kit being 
bolted on. I always though you had to machine the crank before  this could be 
done. What' up?  Any thoughts on the scroll vs the add  on rubber one?
