I own a big US sedan and it is a gutless wonder.
I bought a Jaguar S with a 3.0 engine and it boggles my mind how fast it 
is for a decent size car.
I will say that a stick over an automatic makes a huge difference.
My daughter went from a stick to an automatic, same car, same engine, 
and she hates it.
My Ford gutless wonder had a CVT automatic, 0-60 in about 10 minutes.
The Jag has a stick, 0-100 real quick :)
